"Amateur Night" is not a really bad movie the large cast contains a number of good actors, and there are a few genuinely fresh and funny moments provided as relief from the otherwise dull, melodramatic tone. In the hands of an original writer and director this segmented tale of the people and problems gathered together for an amateur talent contest in a California roadhouse called the Dixie could have been interesting and moving. But there's no subtlety here, no respect for the intelligence or even alertness of the viewer. "Amateur Night" slides on down like flavored gelatin with nothing to catch hold of, nothing to stick in the mind. After it's over you might recognize the false leads and dangling ends, and realize how shallow and false the tries for human drama were, but by then it's gone.

The characters are one-dimensional: Victor French is the worried roadhouse owner with a warm heart; Louise Latham is almost unbearable as the wise mother-figure who gives everyone the good advice they can't take; Candy Clark builds her character out of little more than shining eyes, ingenuous smile and wisecracks; Sheree North overplays the bitter drunk; Don Johnson does what he can as Cowboy, a ramblin' kind of guy; and Tanya Tucker is unimpressive in her dramatic debut as a young singer struck by stage fright. For purposes of titillation, a compleijy gratuitous (and unresolved) subplot about a "disco killer" is dragged in. There are a couple of nice songs (one by Tracy Nelson, one by Tanya Tucker) and some good humorous touches, but otherwise this is a typical television time-waster.
