THIS WEEK ON THE MIRACLE STRIP ON THE COVER STEADY WORKER •• Ed McMahon, who has been Johnny Carson's sidekick on NBC Television Network's "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" since its premiere on October 1, 1962, says: "My work is my hobby. It's my vocation and my avocation all in one." In addition to his appearances with Carson, McMahon is a nightclub performer and actor. "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" is colorcast on NBC TV Mondays through Fridays, beginning at 10:30 p.m. Guests from the fields of politics, stage, screen and television, as well as those persons currently in the news, are put at easy by Johnny's and Ed's candid way of leading them into conversations and discussing things of interest to the television and studio audience. Johnny, of course, is known for his dry wit and has been called the master of ad lib. From time to time, various television personalities substitute for Johnny on the show.
