Associated Press Military families adjust holiday plans By The Associated Press Support groups helping families of Wisconsin soldiers serving in Iraq deal with the separation are making plans for the holidays that include parties, dinners and even a float in a Christmas parade. Families and children of some soldiers from northern Wisconsin will ride on a float "Christmas in Iraq" during the upcoming Christmas parade in Ashland, said Sue Garz, family support coordinator for the National Guard's 106th quarry team headquartered in Ashland. The unit has 11 of its 54 members on duty in Iraq.

Other members of the unit will provide a color guard for the parade, she said. "Everybody seems to be adjusting. It has been a real big adjustment," Garz said. The Wisconsin National Guard has 1,530 members on active duty. Of those, 950 are deployed overseas, Guard spokesman Lt.

Col. Tom Donovan said. The Guard has a total of 9,900 members in Wisconsin. Across Wisconsin, various groups have been established to help families cope with loved ones being gone to war. Immediately after the fighting began, The Highground, a veterans park near Neillsville, hosted a Circle of Support each week for veterans and families of those serving in the war.

But it "faded out" months ago when it looked like the war was over, said Kara Bulletin Board Everybody's still got families here, but that soldier missing is probably a really big thing for most people. Julie Kessler, family program volunteer, 724th Engineering Battalion, based in Spooner 66- church. Rendell, event coordinator for The Highground. The coming of winter and colder weather also generally ends most organized activities at the park and leads to fewer visitors, she said. Linda Fournier, a spokeswoman for Fort McCoy in western Wisconsin, said the training base expects to have about 2,600 soldiers within two weeks.

"Normally around here on Christmas, our clubs are closed, but they will be open," she said. "I am sure because we will have that many troops, each of the mess halls that will be open will provide special meals for Christmas." Julie Kessler, a family program volunteer with Company of the Wisconsin National Guard's 724th Engineering Battalion in Spooner, said families have made ornaments Memorial Public Library. Kessler, whose husband, Tim, is serving in Iraq, said she hoped to make the holidays easier for both the families and their soldiers. "Everybody's still got families here, but that soldier missing is probably a really big thing for most people," she said. Lt. Col. Jim Longtine of the Air National Guard's 128th Air Refueling Wing in Milwaukee said it has about five members in Iraq.

do have an annual Christmas party and silent auction to help support the families," he said. The wife of a Milwaukee National Guard captain with the 724th Engineer Battalion stationed in Iraq said the separation was hard with Christmas coming. "We wish they were home with us," she said, asking that her name not be used because she lives alone with her 1-year-old daughter. "We all feel very fortunate they are safe. They are doing good work over there and proud of what they are doing." She has given up one family Christmas tradition going out and cutting a fresh tree.

Instead, she went to Goodwill and purchased a used artificial tree. "We used to be ones who donated to Goodwill and not bought things there. Those are the things that are kind of hard. You do what you can," the wife of the soldier said.
