WAHINGTON, Sept. watching the progress of business since the adjournment of Congress and studying the effects of the tariff law on trade note with satisfaction the great increase in the output of pig iron.

The weekly production of pig iron for September will exceed 190.000 tons, as compared with 113,000 tons in October, 1896, an increase of over 60 per cent in eleven months. The output in July was something like 164,000 tons a week, since which time there has been a steady enlargement. and production is now at the highest level known in years of prosperity before the panic. Iron is considered the barometer of trade, and students of commercial and industrial conditions watch its fluctuations with the utmost care. 00000000000 berta Van Camp, grammar; Rena Harris, 2d primary; Maude Eggleston.

BANK GLOSED First National of Benton Harbor Succumbs $20,000 Indiana Loan Said to be the Cause Failure of the Bank has Been Anticipated for Sometime Geo. B. Caldwell of Detroit, National Bank Examiner, last night closed the First National Bank of Benton Harbor, and this morning there is much excitement in the twin cities over the matter.

The full particulars of the failure are not at hand at the time the SATURDAY HERALD goes to press. It is said that the amount due depositors is about $90,000 but the assets cannot be ascertained. The bank has been liberal in its dealing with the people of its own city and it is not surprising that in the course of business some bad loans would be made, but very few, however, had suspicion that the bank was on a weak foundation. It carried heavy loans on several large properties and one of its largest was a $20,000 loan lately made to the Thompson Glass Co. at Gas City, which on investigation is considered a bad one.

There has been a run on the bank by depositors for. sometime and the deposits have shrunk many thousands of dollars. The bank was the oldest in the city, being conducted originally under the name of Baley Bros. -James and Sam'l. It was incorporated as a National bank in 1890.

Capital stock, 00). Surplus stated at $40,000. It is said none of the city's funds were in the bank. Deposits were received up to the closing hour yesterday. The bank is burdened with considerable real estate on which, owing to the times, nothing conld be realized.

A thorough investigation of the affairs of the bank will now be made and a future course decided uport. It is said depositors will be paid in full. The SATURDAY HERALD understands that some of our St. Joseph citizens are caught in the failure. Sons of Veterans.
