Lighting levels have also been lowered, yet by using specially-designed fixtures, there is no decrease in relative brightness. One of the other design changes made to conserve energy has been to switch to a more efficient, central-chilled water plant wihthin the mall from the originally-planned roof-top unit. The new plant has resulted in a greater cooling capacity with less energy requirements.

Additional stores will open soon after. Several stores, including Beall's Department Store, which is the firm's largest of 75 Texas outlets, have already opened. When completed, an estimated 50 stores, boutiques, restaurants, and theatres will be located in Northcross Mall. Unlike many other Texas shopping centers, the 360,000 -square-foot Northcross Mall has a strong core of family-oriented recreation and entertainment facilities most of which will be operating by opening day. The Ice Age skating rink, the only one within 200 miles of Austin, is located in the mall's central courtyard.

The rink is open daily to the public and offers lessons for children and adults.
