Friday, January 1913 Journal-Newt, Hamilton, Ohio Page 13 American Style 1 looks at Berkeley There's a long winding stairway to nowhere. And boys and girls in elaborate costumes singing and dancing their way up and down the steps. Sound like a vintage Busby Berkeley musical on the very late show? It's a vintage Busby Berkeley- style musical segment on the ABC Television Network's very contemporary "Love, American Style," tonight at 10. The musical comedy with the vintage movie musical aura, a first for the long- running series, is "Love and Swinging Suitor," written by Ed Scharlach from a story by Mimi Greenberg and Harold Clein. It was born in the smoke- filled room of a writers "We all (the "Love" staff writers and executive producers, Jim Parker and Arnold Margolin) had our feet up on our desks, couches and coffee tables during one of those insane weekly events we call story sessions when an interestin question came up.

'When are we going to something new and ex I remember someone saying petulantly and we sometimes are rather petulant around here that we'd managed to do all right for the past four years or so," Parker said, stroking his beard. "And I put him down by saying that that was because we always came up with the unexpected, something that made TV viewers decide to see what 'Love' was up to, even if another channel had all the saints and angels as well as Bob Hope and Duke Wayne sounded off. Scharlach on it." mentioned the Greenberg- Clein idea." Scharlash said. "For a minute I was down on it, but the next second offered to write it." The Greenberg-Clein idea was about a young executive, Murray, who was raised and conditioned, especially in his attitude toward love, by the lavish movie musicals that made Busby Berkeley a household word when he was a youngster. "Murray's a real shy dude who never really makes it with the chicks," Parker explained. "When he does fall in love, he thinks he has to sing to like the hero in a Berkeey opus. He falls in love with his new secretary (played by Bridget Hahley) and 'gives her this treatment.

She is frightened at first, then decides he's a harmless nu we end it with the tun Berkeley treatment -stairs, clouds, the effect of a full orchestra, girls and boys dancing, girls and boys singing," Scharlach enthused. "We never had such a cast and a production budget for one segment before," Parker said, looking for a minute like a budget- conscious Hollywood TV producer. "At first, we thought of going all out and getting a top-name: singer-dancer from the Berkeley era to do the role, but then we realized the part called for a shy guy who doesn't really sing or dance that well, so we got Warren Berlinger. Berlinger's the guy we've been using a lot lately. He's going places, very versatile and funny.

He's a regular on that new ABC show, 'A Touch of with Shirley Booth (Saturdays, p. EST)." "Love and the Singing Suitor is a really different show," Scharlach said. "Ah, that's what you always say when you write them," Parker muttered.
