But since Mike Hitch began his first full season as owner in 1993, the Tigers have the worst record in the majors. In Tuesday's opener, the A's took charge with a four-run rally that featured a triple and three doubles. Wednesday, it was extra bases again. Chavez hit a homer off Wilfredo Ledezma for a 1-0 lead in the first.

The bottom of the order got to Ledezma with two out and nobody on in the second. Scott Hatteberg, the No. 7 hitter, doubled and scored on Adam Piatt's double. No. 9 hitter Eric Byrnes singled in Piatt for a 3-0 lead.

Piatt hit a two-out solo homer in the fourth over the centerfield fence. Ledezma stood with hands on his hips as he watched the ball disappear. Ledezma left trailing, 4-2, after a leadoff single in the. sixth. In the series before the All-Star break, Ledezma and fellow rookie Matt Roney each made a quality start against the high-scoring Red Sox at Comerica Park.

Each is 0-for-4 in quality starts since then. Manager Alan Trammell hasn't given any indication he'd pull either from the rotation. The Tigers got within 3-2 in the third on Bobby Higginson's two-run homer to right-center. Higginson began the night 4-for-30 lifetime off Tim Hudson, who fanned Higginson to end the first. With runners on second and third, two out and Matt Walbeck up, Hudson never threw a fastball as the count went full. On 3-1, Walbeck was out in front of an pitch and pulled it foul. Then, on 3-2, Hudson unleashed the first fastball of the at-bat. Walbeck swung and missed at the pitch. Hudson pitched eight innings and improved to 10-4.

NOTEBOOK: Chavez's homer was the first Ledezma has allowed to a left-handed batter in four months, since he gave up two in a game to Kansas City in the second week of the season. Piatt's homer was the 14th to clear the centerfield fence in Comerica's four seasons. Ledezma is a power pitcher, but he didn't get his first strikeout until the fifth, when he used an off-speed pitch to fan Ramon Hernandez with two out and the bases loaded. They sat in Bonderman's truck and talked about how amazing it is to be in the major leagues. A year ago as Oakland minor leaguers, they roomed together in spring training. At that point, Bonderman hadn't pitched in pro ball, and Harden had pitched part of one season. Harden, 21, reached the majors last month. He's 3-0 in four starts, including beating the Tigers on Tuesday night with a scintillating array of pitches and speeds.

Harden stopped at Double-A (where he retired all 39 hitters he faced) and Triple-A. Bonderman, 20, joined the Tigers from Class A. In today's series finale, Harden will experience for the first time the same mixed emotions Bonderman did for the first time Tuesday night sitting in the other dugout, in the other team's uniform, watching his friend pitch. "I hoped," said Bonderman, "that it would be scoreless when he came out of the game, and then we would win." These friends are so competitive, they want to face each other. "It's going to happen," Bonderman said.

"We're both going to be around for a "I was hoping we could match up in this series," Harden said. "It would be a lot of fun." INCE RETURNS: Catcher Brandon Inge has made mechanical changes in his hitting before perhaps too many. Wednesday, he returned to the Tigers with a new, simpler mental outlook on hitting. "I don't worry about things as much," Inge said. "I know how to cope with strikeouts or making outs or losing." Inge was called up from Triple-A Toledo when catcher A.

J. Hinch returned to the disabled list with a recurrence of his pulled left groin. Manager Alan Trammell said he hadn't decided how much Inge will catch. Matt Walbeck started at catcher Wednesday night. Inge resumes major league play with the .150 average that got him sent to Toledo.

"Unfortunately, he doesn't get to wipe the slate clean," Trammell said. "We hope he can do that mentally." At Toledo, pitching coach Jeff Jones told Inge that his mind seemed cluttered when he batted. Soon, Inge had a phone conversation with Brian Peterson, the Tigers' performance enhancement instructor or, as Inge referred to him, a sports psychologist. Inge immediately felt better at the plate. He cooled in recent weeks, but he has kept the worry-free philosophy he gained from Peterson.

Inge homered Tuesday in his Toledo finale. Inge was asked if he can prove the rest of the season that he can fill the club's vacancy at catcher. "Of course I can," he said. Hinch was injured on a rain-soaked field Tuesday. He originally was injured on a soggy field in Chicago.

Both came as he was battting: "It's like I got struck twice by lightning." LOOSE CLUBHOUSE: In a sign that clubhouse morale remains afloat, players held Kangaroo Court this week. Those are the clubhouse sessions where the players needle and fine each other with little mercy. "Everybody gets along well," said Tigers right-hander Steve Sparks. On a team with clubhouse divisions, Kangaroo Court might not go over so well. TIGERS AVERAGES WEDNESDAY'S RESULTS Atlanta at Milwaukee, inc.
