86 SUNDAY, MAY 4, 1997 LIFE THE SALINA JOURNAL PET HINT Rubber key circles silence dog tags Dear Readers: Here's a hint from my friend Judy and her daughter Jesse Rose. Their little dog, Wiggles II, a darling cairn terrier, wore dog tags that clanged together, making a lot of noise. Judy used two of the color-coded rubber key circles to put around the tags. No more jingle, jangle, jingle. Dear Heloise: It's adoptathon time - that lifesaving spring weekend when animal organizations join together to find a home for each and every pet in participating shelters throughout the world. This year Pet Adoptathon take place on May 3 and 4 and over 1,000 animal shelters and humane societies are registered to participate. Once again, North Shore Animal League and the lams Company are sponsoring this international event, which will take place in shelters and humane societies throughout the United States, Canada, England, Venezuela and South Africa. Animal lovers should visit their local adoptathon shelter on May 3 and 4 and adopt a loving adult dog or cat, puppy or kitten. Best of all, you will get a lifetime of companionship and unconditional love from a cute and cuddly furry friend. For the name of the shelter- nearest you, call the adoptathon hotline: 1-800-863-4267 today through Sunday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight time. You can also visit our web- site at www.nsal.org. — Michael Arms, North Shore Animal League, Port Washington, N.Y. Dear Michael: You have my vote for a worthwhile cause. Our two adoptees, Blackjack and J.D., agree. Call to find out how you can bring one of their four-legged buddies into your home. — Heloise Dear Heloise: I enjoy the shenanigans of the comics and cut them out when I find a real cute one. They have accumulated, so I put. the clippings in a photo album. The plastic sheets hold them very well. I call the book "Pet's Giggle Book" (my husband calls me Pet). I put my name, address and phone number on the album. I've let lots of folks in the hospital and friends borrow my giggle book and they told me to send the idea to you. — Evelyn Broyles, Christiansburg, Va. Dear Evelyn: I bet people do get a kick out of your giggle book. Who doesn't like to read the comics, and putting them into an album and sharing them is a great idea. Glad you wrote. — Heloise Dear Heloise: I buy the concentrated liquid detergent in large bottles and this can be difficult to apply to stained clothing. I reuse an old dishwashing liquid bottle and fill with the detergent. It is perfect to squirt on a stain as needed without having to handle the bulky bottles. — Jan Hutchison, Hickory, N.C. Dear Heloise: I recycle plastic packaging peanuts by using them to fill the bottom third or half of a whiskey barrel and other very large planters before adding the soil. Most summer perennials do not need great depth of soil, and large quantities of potting soil are heavy and expensive. Dear Marjorie: Something interesting to consider, before filling the barrels and planters with the foam peanuts: Test one to be sure the kind you have aren't water-soluble. All you have to do is put one in a glass of water to see if it will dissolve. You don't want all your efforts to be wasted. — Hcloise Send a money- or time-saving hint to Heloise, PO Box 795000, San Antonio TX 78279-5000 or fax it to 210-HELOISE.
