Judge Ford earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1948 and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1951. i She began her career in private practice with her father and brother, William Bledsoe HI. In 1962, she became an assistant U.S. attorney in Detroit.

In 1964, she was named assistant corporation counsel for Detroit. She was elected to Recorder's Court in 1966 and spent more than 30 years there as a jurist. She retired in 1999, a year after the court merged with Wayne County Circuit Court. Former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Patricia Boyle shared an office with Judge Ford in the U.S. Attorney's Office.

They reunited at Recorder's Court, where they shared the bench. She saw Judge Ford about a week ago. The two gossiped and caught up. At the end of the visit, they were able to say those three important words: I love you. "She was my mentor professionally, and we became the best of friends," Boyle said.

"We were two working women in a world of men. We shared a love of the law. We both had young children." Though genteel and soft spoken, Judge Ford developed a reputation as a tough judge who gave stiff sentences. She was nicknamed "Mean Geraldine." "The impact might have felt like but it wasn't mean-spirited," said Boyle, now retired. Besides her daughter, Judge Ford is survived by another daughter, Anita Ford, and three grandchildren.
