First off, the guy on the podium, Mark Wigglesworth, has emerged as a potential successor to Detroit Symphony Orchestra music director Neeme Jarvi, who steps down in 16 months. Wigglesworth, a 39-year-old Brit, has been impressive in two visits as a guest conductor, and the table is set this weekend for another revealing set of concerts. That brings us to the second and third reasons A A iVi Lettie Alston's to pay attention: an intriguing program that includes Benjamin Britten's rarely heard song cycle "Leslllu- concerts at Oakland University have become must-see events.

Local musicians are playing cupid, with several events planned that will help you serenade your sweetheart. THE VENUS BALL IS GIRL POWER at its finest. And this year, the annual showcase of local female talent will grow from one day to two, filling the Magic Bag in Ferndale on Feb. 13-14.

Don't let Friday the 13th superstition sway you from going out. Singer Nikki James will host the Feb. 13 lineup, which will include singer-songwriters Liz Larin, Tamara Bedricky, Iris and Carolyn Striho Rosalyn Mazzola along with pop-rock band the Killer Flamingos. Hearts keep pumping with fabulously funky host Linda Lexy on Feb. 14 and a mix of sounds featuring blues diva Thornetta Davis, female-led rockers Stealing Alan's Rights, the eloquently rhythmic sounds of R.I.B., folk songstress Whit Hill the Postcards and singer-songwriter Rachel White.

On both nights, artist Kris Castor is set to paint musically inspired scenes live onstage during each performance. Admission is $8 each night, and doors will open at 8 p.m. Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward, Ferndale. 248-544-3030. AT THE 17TH ANNUAL EROTIC POETRY MUSIC FESTIVAL, set for Feb.

14 at Alvin's in Detroit, you'll find a combination of erotic art, kinky poetry and hot music. The not-for-the-faint-of-heart event will be hosted by dominant duo the Impaler and Mistress Donna. It will feature giam rockers City Call Girls, eclectic cabaret act Terror at the Opera with Sweetheart, flirtatious rockers Choking Susan and Roshambo and acoustic music from Fig. Featured poets will include the foul-mouthed Jimmy Doom. Sexually explicit poetry, will be offered by Cindi St.

Germain, Blair, Soulspeak, Vic Toledo, Tuka, Rod Reinhart and more. Enjoy erotic art by Jeff Hocking and Faith Gazic while browsing the sexy wares by Karma and Suzy Sandy's Relationship Enhancements. 313-831-4577. pushing the envelope on eroticism is the Dirty Show, a controversial erotic art exhibition with creations from Detroit's dirtiest minds and beyond. It's set for Feb. 13-15 at Tangent Gallery in Detroit. The Dirty Show offers fantasy and fetish art and features installations, live performance and erotica in all 'mediums.

Burlesque dancers and DJs will entertain guests beginning at 8 p.m. Feb. 13-14 and noon Feb. 15. Tangent Gallery, 715 Milwaukee, Detroit.

Alston generally works with a theme, from electronic music to music by women composers. This year, the 10th anniversary of the series, Alston turns to music by African and African-American composers. The program includes an Alston premiere and pieces by Cedric Ayo Bankole, Margaret Bond, Valerie Capers, Atkin Euba, William Grant Still and others, with various works employing voice, piano, African drumming and narration. 8 p.m. Saturday, Varner Recital Hall, Oakland University campus, Auburn Hills.

$15, adults; $8, students and seniors. JAZZ Looks like we've got a jazz organ festival brewing this weekend in Ann Arbor. At the Bird of Paradise, Gerard Gibbs Organized Crime take center stage. A Detroiter, Gibbs is a force of nature a dynamite organist with a big-time resume, equally at home in jazz, blues and funk, who has put together a firecracker trio in his own image. 9 p.m.
