So when better than now to take a long, detailed look at the roundball heritage in Kentucky, where the sport is even more a part of the land scape than racehorses? KET does just that in "Basketball in Kentucky: Great Balls of Fire," a tour-hour special tonight and tomorrow night at 8 that is part of the network's annual TeleFund effort. The documentary is narrated by former Louisvillian Bob Edwards, host of National Public Radio's "Morning Edition." It goes beyond the fabled traditions of the University or Kentucky wildcats ana the Univer sity of Louisville Cardinals to col leges around the state. I he tour includes 130 interviews filled with memories of bygone eras. when the shots were either two-hand ed or underhanded and when the ref erees didn't call toul "unless you got knocked in the teeth, as one old timer recalls.

"Great Balls of Fire" also looks at many of the high school teams that made headlines. Two new sitcoms Just what television needs: two more sitcoms about the love and sex lives of twentysomethings. Ready or not, UPN unveils "As If" at 9 and "The Random Years" at 9:30 tonight. "The Random Years" is the better of the two, but that's not saying much.

UPN describes "As If" as "six, young, urban adults exploring the emotional drama and exhilaration of the one time in their lives when everything seems possible, ranging from the sweetly beguiling to the most post-modern cynical Or, in other words, young people with raging hormones chasing one another around nightspots and apart ments. "As If" seems confusingly written and poorly acted, without much of a plot. But it may appeal to viewers who are 20. "The Random Years" is about the lives of three guys living in an apartment. They've known each other since grade school, and their lines wouia inaicaie mey naven graauar ed far beyond that.

Add to the mix a young woman who moves in down the hall. This looks like a what-do-women-want sitcom, but it may not be around long enougn to una out. "As If" and "The Random Years" replace "Roswell," which goes on a seven-week vacation. The teen-age sci-fi series is No. 134 in the season standings, so you'll probably have a better chance of seeing a UFO next season tnan "Koswell.

'Dharma Greg' "Dharma Greg" returns tonight at 8. It has been off the ABC schedule so long that some viewers may nave mougni it naa Deen canceled. That may hanDen later this season. if the 62nd-ranked show doesn't pick up some more audience in a tiurry. The network says the show, which nas been wallowing in downbeat sto ry lines, has been resuscitated to capture the energy and excitement of its tirst season in 1997 as a too-30 show.
