Wellsvilie Marshall Smith, of Dillsburg, began active duty as a special police officer in the borough last Friday. Smith, who also holds a similar position in Franklintown and East Berlin, is a deputy sheriff of York county. Borough council appointed Smith as a special officer last November, but he didn't assume his, duties until last week. Smith will hold the position for a trial period of 60 days, after which council will decide on hiring him on a permanent basis, a member of council said last night.

His salary was reported at $1 per hour. will be on duty only when it is desirable to have an officer present in the borough. Council Elects New Policeman William L. Meninger, Dallas-town, RD 1, named member of Red Lion police force succeeding Ervin Fauth, resigned. Red Lion William L.

Meninger, Glenn Terrace, Dallastown, RD 1, was elected a member of the Red Lion borough police department last evening to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Ervin Fauth. Meninger was chosen after he and two others of the seven applicants were interviewed by borough council's public safety and Chief Burgess Raymond D. Roth. The committee includes: Gordon Neff, chairman, Jean La-Motte and Frederick Toomey. Meninger, a former truck operator, will assume his duties tomorrow morning, Neff announced last evening.

His salary was set at $48 per week for the first six months. Fauth's resignation will be effective Saturday. Fauth intends to enter business in another field. According to action approved by council at its Friday evening meeting, Meninger will work the No. 2 post, which includes the checking of the parking meters and foot patrol duty in the central section of town, for an indefinite trial period.

Iff T- Mrs. Mary Ditmer Of Dillsburg RD Given Last Rites Dillsburg Funeral services were held yesterday at Klugh Funeral home, here, for Mrs. Mary Ditmer who died Friday at the home of her son, Charles F. Ditmer, Dillsburg, RD.

Pallbearers were: Eugene Murray, John Murray, Myrl Markel, Howard Weaver, Warren Myers and Arthur Bushey. Rev. G. N. Young, pastor of Franklintown Lutheran church, officiated.

Oliver K. Maurer, president, announced the appointment of several adult committee chairmen. David R. Fink, immediate past president of the center, was named chairman of the finance commit1 tee. It had been stated earlier that the financial drive, to raise an approximate $40,000 for the renovating of the Municipal building into new quarters for the center, will be inaugurated next month.

Charles R. Nitchkey was reappointed as chairman of the program committee. The president was authorized to appoint the personnel for the building committee from among the groups represented on the center's board of governors. Mrs. Harvey Frederick, center supervisor, announced canteen expenditures last month were $98.70 while the receipts were $99.88.

These volunteer chaperones served at the center last month, Mrs. Frederick said: Mrs. W. Russell Strayer, Mrs. David R.

Bacon, The Brogue, Dies. Teacher 37 Years The Brogue Robert E. Bacon, a teacher in Chanceford township schools for the past 37 years, died yesterday at 10:25 a. m. in St.

Joseph's hospital, Lancaster. He was 60. He was a member of Bethel Methodist church and Sunday school. He served as superintendent of the Sunday school for the past 20 years and was a member of the church trustee board. Mr.

Bacon was president of the Bethel Cemetery association, and was affiliated with the Masonic Order 649 of Red Lion Surviving are: His wife, Clara "NMargaret Haugh Bacon; a son, R. Motorist Fined $50 A Red Lion RD 2 motorist paid a fine of $50 after a hearing before Chief Burgess Raymond Roth yesterday morning on a charge of disorderly conduct as a result of an automobile accident on West Broadway about 7 o'clock Sunday night. Police said the defendant, Leroy Schoff, was driving west en West Broadway when his car sideswiped an east-bound vehicle, operated by Theodore Scheffer, York RD 3.

Borough Officer George Rohrbaugh estimated damage to both cars at $150. No one was injured. Aboard Cruiser Two local youths are serving aboard the light cruiser USS Portsmouth with the Atlantic Fleet. They are Chester D. Schell, seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mrs.

Schell, who entered the naval service June 13, 1947, received his recruit, training at the Naval Training center, Great Lakes, 111.
