IOC The Detroit News Sunday, November 10, 3002 College Football MAC: Roundup 4 WMU wins; N. Illinois upends Bowling Green ern Illinois took over on downs when Harris' run fell short on fourth-and-2. Harris completed 27 of 52 passes for 271 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Bowling Green running back Joe Alls (Sterling Heights Stevenson), who entered the game averaging 111 yards and 7.6 per carry, was held to 31 on 18 carries. Early on, Harris and the Bowling Green offense had just as much trouble throwing the ball as running it.

Harris was 4-of-i5 at one point, overthrowing receivers and frequently passing on the run under a heavy rush. By Jim Spadafore The Detroit News KALAMAZOO Western Michigan finally won a close game Saturday, but it took a wild start and a dramatic finish. WMLfs Tyrone Walker returned the opening kickoff 100 yards to tie a school record. The Broncos made it 24-0 after 13 minutes, had elapsed.

But Eastern Michigan came back and took a 31-30 lead with 7:16 to go in the game on Ime Akpan's second touchdown run. Then Robert Menchinger, who had lost his starting job, kicked a 39-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining to give the Broncos a 33-31 victory at Waldo Stadium. The field goal was set up by a 56-yard third-down pass from Chad Munson to Walker with 18 seconds remaining. Bowling Green had been averaging 47 points, but the Falcons were forced to throw play after play in the second half after falling behind, 20-3. Turner, the nation's second-leading rusher, carried 40 times and showed no effects from an ankle injury that forced him to leave Northern Illinois' previous game.

Bowling Green cut is deficit to 23-17 with 7:12 remaining when Josh Harris threw a pass to Robert Redd on fourth-and-7. After struggling in the first half, Harris went 7-of-io for 64 yards on the 14-play, 80-yard drive. Bowling Green got the ball right back when Haldi was hit as threw the ball and Janssen Patton intercepted. However, Bowling Green could not move the ball past midfield, and North WMU is 3-7 and 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference; EMU is 3-7 and 1-5. The Broncos had lost four in a row, and Saturday's result was a big emotional lift for Coach Gary Darnell, who blamed himself for the close losses.

Western had lost four games by a total of 11 points. "I don't know if I could have handled (the postgame news conference if Western had lost) because I think we've invented every way you could not to win one," Darnell said. Darnell was asked if he said anything to Menchinger just before the field-goal attempt. "Nothing else than life and death," Darnell said, laughing. Menchinger hadn't attempted a field goal since he missed one in the EMU Coach Jeff Woodruff stressed his team's injuries.

"We're so beat up we've got defensive guys playing offense and offensive guys playing defense," Woodruff said. "We have kids playing who have never played before. We'll see who we have left and buy some more duct tape." (At) Northern Illinois 26, No. 20 Bowling Green 17: Michael Turner ran for 192 yards and Josh Haldi threw two touchdown passes, helping send Bowling Green to its first defeat.
