i 8C The Detroit News Sunday, November 3, 2002 College Football Big Ten: Roundup GAME DAY REPORT Iowa stays undefeated in Big Ten feu -Uf 1 4. Ml-' 1 1 If 7 11 vJi ff6- and I think we did that pretty well today." Badgers Coach Barry Alvarez said his team didn't execute. "We were beaten by a very good football team," he said. "We came in thinking we could establish the running game, but we never did. I'm not making excuses, but they just out-executed us." The Ilawkeyes, who were without starting running back Fred Russell (Romulus High School), were held to 92 yards rushing.

But Banks helped them pull away in the second half. Banks hit Clark for 37 yards down the middle, then connected with C.J. Jones for 22 yards to set up Nate Kaeding's 30-yard field goal, his 22nd straight over the last two seasons. The streak was broken in the third quarter when Kaeding missed from 27 yards. Iowa held Wisconsin to 31 yards rushing and three first downs in the first half.

Iowa's offense, which often has scored early this season, did not mount a consistent drive until the second quarter. (At) Northwestern 41, Indiana 37: Jason Wright ran for a career-high 219 yards and four touchdowns for Northwestern, which ended a five-game losing streak. Wright has 1406 yards rushing, making him the eighth player in Northwestern history to top 1,000 in a season. Indiana took advantage of the country's worst run defense with a season-high 232 yards on the ground. But the Iloosiers couldn't overcome their mistakes, losing their sixth straight on the road.

Indiana set up a touchdown by Northwestern (3-7, 1-5) in the third quarter with a botched fake punt and another with an interception. Indiana (3-6, 1-4) was clinging to a 37-34 lead with 5:43 to play when it shanked a punt to give Northwestern the ball at the Indiana 44. IOWA CITY, Iowa Brad Banks threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, helping No. 9 Iowa end a five-game losing streak against Wisconsin with a 20-3 victory Saturday. Iowa's defense, ranked second in the nation against the run, held the Badgers to 74 yards and 133 overall.

Banks threw touchdown passes of 21 yards to Maurice Brown and 23 to tight end Dallas Clark. Banks finished i6-of-26 passing and rushed for 36 yards for the Ilawkeyes (9-1, 6-0 Big Ten). Wisconsin (6-4, 1-4) struggled on offense. Quarterback Brooks Bollinger was injured late in the first half and didn't return. Bollinger finished 2-of-9 for 46 yards.

Running back Anthony Davis was held to 34 yards on 16 carries. "We go out and play hard-nosed defense," Iowa defensive lineman Colin Cole said. Chris Taylor gained a career-high 102 yards on 21 carries. Detroit News staff reports and wire services. Northwestern wasted little time capitalizing on that mistake. Brett Uasanez, playing despite a broken bone in his left leg, found Jon Sehweighardt for a 9-yard gain and Ashton Aikens for 10 yards. Wright then went around left tackle for a 7-yard touchdown to make it 41-37.

But Mixon is now No.

1 among Mid-American Conference running backs for rushing yards in a game. Mixon (Detroit Denby) had 43 carries for 377 yards and four touchdowns to power Central to a 47-21 victory over Eastern Michigan (3-6, 1-4). Mixon beat the MAC record of 376 yards set by Miami of Ohio's Travis Prentice against Akron in 1999. Mixon also, broke the Rynerson Stadium record of 373 yards set by Kent State's Astron Whatley, and his total is 21 yards better than the school record of 356 set by Brian Pruitt in 1994 against Toledo. The Division I record is 406 yards, set by Texas Christian's LaDanian Tomlinson against Texas-El Paso in 1999.

Mixon set the tone early. On the first play from scrimmage, he raced 65 yards for a touchdown. "The holes were b-i-g," Mixon said. "The holes were amazing. The line made great blocks and so did the receivers and our backs." The Chippewas (4-5, 2-3), who ended a five-game losing streak, never punted.

Eastern was ranked second-to-last, just ahead of Northwestern, in rushing defense in Division and Central wisely stayed with its ground game. The Chippewas rushed for 488 yards and totaled 557. Mixon has rushed for 1,261 yards and nine touchdowns on 230 carries this season. In his first three years, he was limited to 12 games because of injuries and was held to a total of 700 yards. "We dominated the line of scrimmage," CMU Coach Mike DeBord said.

"Robbie ran well and those nine guys (on the field with Mixon) did a great job blocking. Robbie got in a groove and made great cuts." Mixon also had touchdown runs of 1, 17 and 31 yards. "I don't think we ever thought we were going to lose the football game," Miami Cach Larry Coker said. Said center Brett Romberg: "We always seem to pull things out at the end of games. At the end, (Rutgers) seemed to fall apart." A lot of that was due to the performance of Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey, who finished i6-of-3i for 192 yards and two touchdowns. "When you're not ahead in the fourth quarter, that's a pretty good indication that you're in danger of not winning," Dorsey said. "We had to really make sure to fight back and really start executing." Rutgers also played Tennessee close this year, leading 14-7 at halftime before losing 35-14.

Miami plays Tennessee next week. "For three quarters, we led the No. 1 team in the country," Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano said. "When we figure out how to do it for four quarters, then we'll be the No. 1 team in the country someday." Detroit News staff reports and wire services.

AMES, Iowa Seneca Wallace set a school record with 493 total yards and Mike Wagner scored on a i-yard run with 32 seconds remaining to give No. 22 Iowa State a 42-35 victory over Missouri on Saturday. Iowa State (7-3, 4-2 Big 12) broke a two-game losing streak, became bowl eligible for the third straight year and stayed in contention for the league's North Division title. Missouri (4-5, 1-4) kept the heat on Iowa State with redshirt freshman quarterback Brad Smith, who set a school season record for total offense. But Wallace could not be stopped.

He directed a 13-play, 93-yard drive for the winning touchdown, going 4-for-4 for 29 yards running four times for 59 yards. Wallace finished 31-047 for 425 yards and a touchdown and had 10 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. The school record for total offense was 449 yards by Bret Oberg against Oklahoma in 1989. Smith totaled 318 yards to give him 2,683 for the season. Corby Jones set the Missouri record of 2,545 in 1997.

Smith was 23-of-34 for 241 yards and a touchdown and had 15 carries for 77 yards. Missouri tied the score at 35 when Marcus James returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown with 10:26 remaining Missouri's first punt return for a touchdown since 1990. James fielded a bouncing ball at his own 20, ran to his right, picked up a couple of blocks, slipped two tackles and outran the pursuit by cutting back across the field. Iowa State took a 35-28 lead late in the third quarter on Wagner's 10-yard touchdown run and Wallace's 2-point conversion run. The Cyclones could have put it away earlier, but two Associated Press Central's Robbie Mixon rushed for 377 yards, a Mid-American Conference record.

cence Jackson had 20 carries for 83 yards, including a i-yard touchdown run, and Mike Gruzwalski kicked field goals of 22, 20, 18 and 31 yards for Central. E.MU's Troy Edwards had touchdown passes of 5 yards to Chris Roberson and 1 yard to Kevin Zureki, and Ime Akpan scored on a 20-yard run. "We lost the line of scrimmage badly," EMU Coach Jeff Woodruff said. "We had injuries to our three interior (defensive) linemen. We're out of bodies.

But give a lot of credit to Central Michigan." (At) Ball State 17, Western Michigan 7: Marcus Merri-weather had 37 carries for 214 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown for Ball State (4-5, 2-3). Western (2-7, 1-4), which out-gained Ball State 352-260, took a 7-o lead on Chad Munson's 15-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Mosley with four minutes to go in the first quarter. But the Broncos' lead soon disappeared on Stew Monson's 35-yard interception return for a touchdown and Mer-riweather's 2-yard scoring run. Even on his own campus. Banks completed 17 of 30 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns in No. 9 Iowa's 20-3 victory over Wisconsin. Banks is a big reason the Ilawkeyes (9-1, 6-0 Big Ten) have a chance of getting to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 12 years. Yet, he isn't as recognizable as some of the top players from other top-10 teams.

"People still don't notice me around here," he said. Banks also rushed for 36 yards and made two play-fakes that helped get his receivers open for scores. "We're definitely not trading brad Hanks for anybody," Coach Kirk Ferentz said. "lie's done a great job of leading our football team." Struggling to win For the third straight week, No. 1 Miami had a close call.

On Saturday, it was against Rutgers, a 39-point underdog. Ru'gers led 17-14 in the third quarter before Miami rallied for a 42-17 victory, its 30th in a row, the longest streak in the nation. Two weeks ago against Florida State, Miami won, 28-27, when Florida State's Xavier Beitia missed a 43-yard field-goal attempt on the final play. Last week against West Virginia, the score was tied, 17-17, against Vanderbilt since 1961 and has not lost at Vanderbilt since 1969. (At) No, 14 Kansas State 64, Kansas Ell Roberson ran for three touchdowns and threw for another all before halftime for Kansas State in its 100th game against Kansas.

Darren Sproles added 110 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Wildcats, who had five touchdown drives of one minute or less and outgained Kansas, 494-115, in the most lopsided game in series history. Kansas State's largest margin of victory over Kansas had been 54-6 in 1988. The widest margin overall had been Kansas' 55-0 shutout in 1947. The Jayhawks (2-8, 0-6 Big 12) have not beaten the Wildcats (7-2, 3-2) for the Governor's Cup since 1992. Roberson had two 4-yard touchdown runs and threw a 19-yard scoring pass to James Terry to give Kansas State a 30-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Roberson added a i-yard run late in the first half to make it 43-0. That was the most points Kansas had allowed in a half since 1988, when it gave up 49 in the first half of a 63-10 loss to Nebraska. Detroit News staff reports and wire services. touchdown passes by Wallace were nullified penalties and another drive was thwarted by a holding call. Missouri took its only lead, 28-27, 011 Smith's 55-yard touchdown pass to Darius Outlaw, a former quarterback, in the third quarter.

Outlaw was 5 yards downfield when he caught the ball and was able to outrun three defenders to the end zone. Adam Benike's 44-yard field goal gave Iowa State a 27-14 'eaJ in the first half, and the Cyclones got the ball back after a punt. But Wallace fumbled, Missouri recovered at the Iowa State 48 and Smith took Missouri down the field. Zack Abron scored on a 3-yard run with 24 seconds remaining in the half to cut Iowa State's lead to 27-21. No.

12 Alabama 30, (at) Vanderbilt 8: Tyler Watts threw for 176 yards and ran for a touchdown for Alabama, which won its 18th straight game against Vanderbilt. Alabama (7-2, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) assured Vanderbilt (2-7, 0-5) of its 20th consecutive losing season. The Crimson Tide held the ball for more than 36 minutes and totaled 428 yards of offense. Their defense is ranked fourth in the nation, and it held Vanderbilt to a season-low 162 yards.
