(UPI) A possible $1 million, insurance policy against injury before Virginia prep basketball star Moses Malone could turn pro was reported Friday as one of the factors in his decision to ' attend the University of Mary land. Neither Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell nor the university would be involved in the proposed transaction but an adviser to the much soughtaf ter Malone said Driesell had. suggested the insurance ar-, rangement in his successful recruiting effort. The 6-10 high school ail- American already has indicated he probably will turn pro after two seasons at Maryland. The Utah Stars of the American Basketball Association already have drafted him and tried to tempt him to forego college to play in the pro ranks. Bob Kilbourne, athletic director at Petersburg, Va., High School and a counselor to the 19-year-old black star, said no . final insurance arrangement had been worked out but said Driesell expressed confidence it could be accomplished to protect Malone in case injury during his Maryland tenure might jeopardize a lucrative pro contract. In essence, the insurance premiums could be underwritten by a loan from a bank to Malone with the loan being repaid when he signed with the pros. Kilbourne said Driesell told him a similar deal had been arranged when UCLA star Bill Walton resisted turning pro before finishing his final year. "You know he's going to get a million dollar contract when he turns pro," Driesell said. "He can't miss. What bank won't gamble on delaying payment until he signs with the pros? Any pro team would be happy to pay off the loan as part of his bonus." . capri theatre GftYlORd SHOPPING CNTR / IB!)
