BEST. PICTURE MAHK J. TfcHHILLAP fhe usual Oscar-voter conflict of art versus commerce was all but nullified this year by the over- whelming commercial and critical success of "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." "Return" had been widely pected to win multiple Oscars, in1, i eluding best picture. The two pre- vioiis films in director Jackson's trilogy, 2001's "The Fellowship of the Ring" and 2002's "The Two Towers," were nominated for 19 Academy Awards, winning six. But best picture was not one of them, and most Oscar watchers 4 believed the Academy would hori- or the achievement of all three films by giving it to "The Return of the King" this year, accompa- nied by a best director award for, Jackson.

The' director, howeveti was not so sure. 1 "Traditionally, fantasy films don't win the big one," Jackson told the Free Press in November. "Return" went on to win awards for score, film editing, original song, best adapted screenplay and director Peter Jackson. Sean Penn, often called the best actor of his generation, finally had that opinion validated by the Academy when he was named best actor. Penn won his first Oscar for his role in "Mystic River," portraying an ex-con and father in working-class South Boston whose profound grief over the murder of his daughter revives a relationship with two childhood friends in tragic ways. An elated Charlize Theron accepted the best actress award for her image-changing portrayal of Aileen Wuornos in the independent film "Monster." "This has been such an incredible year," said Theron through her tears. "I can't believe this." Tim Robbins was named best supporting actor for his portrayal of a child abuse victim in the drama "Mystic River," while Renee Zellweger won the supporting actress Oscar for playing a woman who refuses to be defeated by the hardships of the Civil War in "Cold Mountain." "I'm overwhelmed, overwhelmed," said an emotional Zellweger as she accepted her first Oscar.

She had been nominated the previous two years for best actress for her roles in "Chicago" and "Bridget Jones's Diary." The first overt political note of the night was sounded when Errol Morris accepted the best documentary award for "Fog Of War," in which the one-time Ford president and Secretary of Defense speaks to the lessons learned from U.S. involvement in Morris described Vietnam as a "rabbit-hole" that the United States was presently in danger of going down again. But his presidency crumbled as he violently cracked down on political dissent, and as armed rebels seized Haiti's north this month. The Bush administration, which had earlier been reluctant to suggest that an elected president step down, has shifted its stance during the past several days, increasing the pressure and finally strongly urging him to resign. "I assume it because the constitution Indicates it," Alexandre said. As the violence wore on, Alexandre pleaded for Haitians to stop the bloodshed.

"Nobody should take justice into their own hands," he said. U.S. officials, meanwhile, swiftly ordered the Marines into action.
