Thursday. SITE: Greenville, N.C. By JOE KAY Associated Press CINCINNATI Leonard Henry ran for a career-high 234 yards and scored three touchdowns yesterday as East Carolina survived another last-minute scare to beat Cincinnati 28-26. The Pirates (6-3, 5-0) qualified for one of Conference USA's four bowl berths and stayed tied with No. 25 Louisville for first place going into Thursday's showdown in Greenville, N.C.

East Carolina surged to a 28-3 halftime lead behind Henry, who followed a wall of blockers on one big run after another. The senior fullback had 168 yards on seven carries in the first quarter alone, when the Pirates rolled up 259 yards and averaged 13.6 per play. Cincinnati (5-4, 4-2) rallied behind backup quarterback George Murray, whose 8-yard touchdown run on a draw play cut it to 28-26 with 46 seconds left. A two-point conversion attempt came up 3 yards short when Chnstshawn Gilliam tackled De-Marco McCleskey on an option play to the short side of the field. Cincinnati recovered an onside kick and moved to the East Carolina 35-yard line.

On fourth down with no timeouts left, coach Rick Minter chose to try a field goal rather than (have Murray throw a desperation pass, and Jonathan Ruffin's 52-yard attempt was several yards short with 7 seconds to play. Ruffin, who won the Lou Groza Award last season, has never made a field goal longer than 46 yards.
