"That's what they were giving us," said quarterback Eddie Eviston, who completed 29 of 42 passes for 235 yards and two TDs. "They weren't giving up the big play." The Tigers gained 165 of their 40fr yards of offense on the ground.

"We tried to suck it up and punch it down their throat," Payne said. "He came to play today," Eviston said of Payne, who also had a game-high 10 receptions for 58 yards. "He never stops moving his feet." "We knew that Ryan Payne would have to have a great game for us to win," coach Bill Cronin said. Payne said his teammates let him know in the locker room beforehand that he could have a big game. "They implied I was going to touch the ball a few times," he said.

"I owe it all to my offensive line, really. The 'O' line really opened up for me." 1 The short passing game was just as effective for the Tigers. Both of Eviston's TD passes came on short throws. The first, a 12-yarder to Chad Spencer, opened the scoring early in the game. The second, on the first of the.

fourth quarter, turned into a 36-yarder Eviston's longest completion of the game when Jason Tenkman took a short pass, dodged two defenders and ran untouched down the sideline. 1 "They were dropping eight and bringing three (linemen)," Eviston said. "When they dropped eight, it was easy to get the short passes working." "Any time you get that (coverage), you have to be patient, because you don't have many lanes to throw in," Cronin said. Tenkman's TD catch made it 31-3, but Carroll started to make it mildly interesting when Heath Wall returned the subsequent kickoff 84 yards for a TD to cut it to 31-10. Justin Wigen's 5-yard scoring run with 4:16 left and J.

D. Emmert's 6-yard TD pass to Casey Fitzsimmons with 33 seconds left got the Saints to the final margin. Emmert, one of the top passers in the NAIA, wound up 22 of 42 for 310 yards and two TDs. But he threw two interceptions and was sacked seven times, and most of his yardage came after the outcome was decided. "We didn't protect (Emmert), and St.

connection helps carry Tigers past Carroll 31-22 By BRIAN DAUGHERTV Special to The Courier-Journal GEORGETOWN, Ky. St. Xavier High School products Ryan Payne and Mike Mulhall played big roles in Georgetown College's 31-22 victory over Carroll College yesterday in the semifinals of the NAIA football playoffs. Payne, a sophomore wingback, rushed for 97 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries. Mulhall, a junior defensive lineman, had seven tackles, five of them behind the line.

''They have sort of the same philosophy at Georgetown that we had in high school," said Mulhall, whose three sacks totaled 26 yards. "We're real disciplined. We all work real hard on this team. We have a small bond within the team." The victory was the 27th straight for the Tigers (13-0), who will defend their national title Dec. 15 in Savannah, against Sioux Falls (S.D.), which routed Benedictine 40-6 in Atchison, Kan.

Michael replaced Pimpleton, who moved to wide receiver on the Hilltoppers' final drive. Johnson had previously left the game with a dislocated shoulder. "The two critical turnovers on our end of the field were just devastating," Harbaugh said.

When asked about losing first-round playoff games at home-the past two seasons, Furman University's football players and coaches have insisted that winning in the postseason is not easy. And now that they have done it, they know for sure that they were right. After Western Kentucky built a 14-0 first-quarter lead in the NCAA Division I-AA playoff game, Furman's defense dominated the second half and forced two key turnovers, rallying to a 24-20 victory in front of 6,143 enthusiastic fans at Paladin Stadium. "I'm proud of our guys," Furman coach Bobby Johnson said.

"They didn't get over there and say, 'Gosh, we're going to lose again in the first They didn't accept that." Third-seeded Furman (10-2) advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1996. The Paladins will play host to Lehigh on Saturday. Lehigh defeated Hofstra 27-24 in overtime yesterday. Freshman fullback Al Means scored the winning touchdown on a 19-yard run with 3:07 remaining, one play after tailback Louis Ivory went down with a knee sprain. Ivory left after rushing for 170 yards on 33 carries.

Jason Johnson's 3-yard run gave Western Kentucky (8-4) a 7-0 lead at the 10:20 mark of the first quarter. Joseph Jefferson's 54-yard punt return set up an 8-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to DeWayne Gal-lishaw to make it 14-0 at the 8:46 mark. Peter Martinez's career-best 51-yard field goal gave the Hilltoppers a 17-7 lead at halftime. But the Hilltoppers gained only 76 second-half yards, and their only points came after Mel Mitchell intercepted Billy Napier and returned the ball to the Furman 22-yard line. Martinez followed with a 33-yard field goal that put Western ahead 20-7 with 6:31 to play in the third.

"This is the way we won eight games this year," Western coach Jack Harbaugh said. "We jump out in front early and control the ball, then turn it over to the defense. We executed our game plan perfectly except for taking care of the ball." Furman's offense finally got rolling late in the third quarter. Napier hit Trent Sansbury for a 47-yard gain, and Eric Emerson capitalized with a 4-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 20-14 with 52 seconds left in the quarter. Shelvis Smith drilled quarterback Donte Pimpleton, who pitched badly to Keith Brooks. A hobbling Brooks got nailed by Josh Cooper, and Wfll Bouton recovered, the bouncing ball. sac uiuii want iu ovui ou uw tripped me up (at the Western Kentucky 38)," Bouton joked, looking at Cooper. Furman turned that miscue into Danny Marshall's 21-yard field goal with 9:45 remaining.

Then, after a Bobby Sippio interception seemed to give the Hilltoppers control, the defense rose again. Sperling and some friends blasted fullback Curtis Hamilton, causing a fumble, and Cooper recovered at the Western 42 with 4:44 to play. "We just swarmed the ball all day," tackle LeBryan Sperling said, "and that was just beautiful to watch." Furman then turned to its offensive staple, the ground game. Ivory carried four times to the 19 but had to be helped off the field after the last run.
