Cincinnati, Ohio KOVEOER 23-25 Georgetown starts title defense with blowout whole thing," he said. "We know it's a four-game playoff. We're not putting (all) our marbles in one round." Tri-State had 326 yards of offense, but managed only 34 in the first half. For the game, the Tigers had 11 tackles for loss and six sacks.

Junior defensive lineman Mike Mulhall, a St. Xavier High School product, finished with eight tackles and two sacks. "They (the defense) just played outstanding in the first half," Cronin said. "I thought our kids went out and outhit them, and I think that was the difference in the ballgame." The secondary also helped the cause. Junior defensive back B.J.

Mattingly had 13 tackles and one interception, and junior defensive back Nate Green had eight tackles. "I think our secondary is as good as you'll find in the country. If we can give our secondary a chance, they'll make plays," Cronin said. Eviston, a senior from Newport, completed 17 of 30 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 63 yards and two more field position.

Four of its first-half drives began in Tri-State territory. "You give them the short field and they're going to put points up on (the scoreboard)," Carlson said. Tri-State finally got on the board when Michael Newbill, who rushed for 148 yards on 25 carries, scored on a 2-yard run with 6:08 left in the third quarter: Georgetown added to its lead on the next drive. The Tigers drove 66 yards in 10 plays, and Eviston's 4-yard run with 1:45 remaining in the quarter made it 35-7. Tyler Johnson's 13-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter brought Tri-State within 35-14.

Eviston threw a 2-yard TD pass to Derrick White with 4:08 left for a 42-14 lead. Tri-State's Jim Oliver finished the scoring with a 20-yard TD pass to Nick Testa nearly three minutes later. Ryan Payne ran for 82 yards on 18 carries for Georgetown. TDs on nine carries. "We had him a couple of times, but he would get out of our grasp," Tri-State coach Dale Carlson said.

"He'd find an open receiver or run with the ball." Offensively, Georgetown was equally dominant in the first half. Eviston connected with Kyle Ruscher on a 10-yard scoring pass with 9:14 left in the first period to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead. Eviston threw a 13-yard TD pass to Brandon Midkiff with 5:44 left in the quarter for a 14-0 lead. The Tigers made it 21-0 with 13 seconds left in the period when Eviston handed off to Neil Warren, who threw it 15 yards to Midkiff in the end zone. Eviston made it 28-0 when he scored on a 1-yard keeper with 3:38 remaining in the half.

Eviston, whose longest completion was 23 yards, had success with the short passing game. "They dropped back a lot and they took away our deep routes," he said. Georgetown College's football team began defense of its NAIA championship with a 42-21 victory over Tri-State (Ind.) yesterday at Rawlings Stadium. The No.

1-ranked Tigers (11-0) led 28-0 at halftime and maintained at least a three-touchdown lead over the No. 10 Thunder (8-3). Georgetown finished with 404 yards of offense and one turnover despite keeping possession for only 25 minutes and 58 seconds. "We came out pretty excited," said Georgetown quarterback Eddie Eviston, who accounted for 267 total yards and five touchdowns. "We didn't execute the whole day like we wanted, but we got the job done." The Tigers will learn today who their second-round opponent will be next week, but coach Bill Cronin said his team is taking it one game at a time.

Memphis (5-5, 3-3 Conference USA), looking for its first winning record since 1994, will play host to Cincinnati next weekend in its regular-season finale. While a 6-5 mark wouldn't guaran-. tee a bowl date, just becoming eligible means progress for the Tigers. "I don't want to sound like nothing is ever good enough," coach Tommy West said, "but think that if you look back at where we are coming from, then this kind of win becomes important for us." Wimprine's four TD passes tied a school record.

He set a Memphis mark by taking part in five TDs. "I think they are much more creative (offensively)," Army coach Toddy Berry jsaid. "Any time you are creative, you have a chance to make more plays." The Black Knights (2-8, 2-5) allowed long scoring drives and were plagued by turnovers three interceptions and a fumble. Memphis con' verted two miscues into TDs and scored on drives of 98 and 95 yards. Wimprine ran for 55 yards and was 12 of 21 passing.

He connected with Antoine Harden on TD throws of 12 and 67 yards, hit Bunkie Perkins for a 38-yard score and threw a 3-yarder to Ryan Jonson. His 1-yard run came as the Tigers pulled away at the end.
