Charlotte 1 Syracuse 4, Rochester 1 Toledo 11, Columbus 6 Accident threatens Maier's career Austria Olympic and World Cup champion Hermann Maier was in stable condition yesterday after seven hours of surgery for injuries from a career-threatening motorcycle accident. Maier suffered a broken right leg Friday when he swerved into a ditch to avoid colliding with a car that turned in front of him.

He also had cuts and muscle tissue damage and lost two teeth. Doctors put Maier's broken bones back into position and secured them with pins. Paint chips were found inside the wound and bone, raising concerns that the leg might become infected. It is unlikely Maier will be able to compete in next year's Salt Lake City Olympics, an attending physician told state television ORF. Another doctor, Alois Karlbauer, said the accident threatens Maier's career.

"I can seriously not say" whether Maier ever will be able to ski again, he said. SOCCER TODAY'S GAMES Louisville at Indianapolis, 1:35 m. Associated Press SOUTH W1LLIAMSPORT, Pa. -Brandon Brewer hit a three-run homer to lead Apopka, past the Rolando Paulino team from the Bronx, N.Y., 8-2 in the U.S.

final at the Little League World Series. Apopka (4-1) will face Tokyo Kitasuna (4-1) a 2-1 winner over Willemstad, Curacao, in the international final in today's championship game. The Bronx (4-1) will play Willemstad (3-2) in the consolation game. Brewer the smallest player on the field at 4 feet 10, 81 pounds sent the first pitch he saw in the third inning over the center-field wall for his second home run of the tournament. Tyler Scanlon and Stuart Tapley also scored as Florida took a 3-1 lead.

Scanlon added a three-run shot in the fourth, a 240-foot fly over the left-field wall that scored Ryan Mar-kell and Jeff Lovejoy for a 6-1 edge. Tapley (2-1) got the win, striking out 12 and avenging an earlier loss to the Bronx. Luilli Vinas (1-1) took the loss. A week earlier the Bronx had beaten Apopka 5-0 in pool play in the first game of the tournament for both. Danny Almonte threw a perfect game with 16 strikeouts, including the first 15 Apopka batters.

But Almonte couldn't pitch yesterday Little League rules prohibit pitchers from throwing consecutive games in the tournament and Vinas was vulnerable. Before Brewer's go-ahead run, Tapley hit a third-inning double to right field that bounced nigh off the wall. Will Blankenship, who has four home runs in the tournament, also hit a ball to the warning track in the third. Drivers 14-17 t. Heart land Sundust.
