Nader also was vicar of the Archdiocesan Downtown Vicariate and belonged to its Pastoral Council. He served on the Citizens District Council and the Metropolitan Jail Ministry, both in Detroit.

He was born in Detroit and after graduating from St. Mary entered the Holy Ghost Fathers Junior Seminary, Cornwells Heights, Pa. He was ordained in 1950 in Norwalk, Conn. but his first mass was celebrated at St. Mary.

His first assignment was to the mission district of Kilimanjaro, in east Africa, where he served for eight years before returning to St. Mary. He belonged to the Provincial Council of the Holy Ghost Congre-' gation for many years and was a member of the Duquesne University In 1989, illness forced him to resign from St. Mary, and until 1998 he lived with family members in the Detroit area. In November 1998, he became parochial vicar of Holy Spirit Parish, Millvale, where he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a priest in 2000.

A memorial service will be at 12:15 p.m. Oct. 12, at St. Mary, 646 Monroe. The family suggests memorial donations to the retirement fund or the education fund of the Holy Ghost Fathers, 6230 Brush Run Road, Bethel Park, Pa.

His sense of humor and love of life in every way is a loss to all who knew him, and he will be terribly missed. "One of Father John's first endeavors was to establish the Restoration Fund," family and friends wrote in a tribute to him. "The exterior brick of the church was sandblasted to near-mint condi- tion. Through his efforts, the interior of the gracious old church was restored and remains today as an inspiring haven of peace and serenity." At the same time, the Rev. Nader served as counsel to Detroit police officers and, in 1971, he was sworn in as executive chaplain of the department. "In many instances of shootings or other dangerous situations involving policemen, he appeared first on the scene to offer assistance wherever needed," his family wrote.
