of his his I a a.m. 1 of (1 10 13 a FREE PRESS WWW.FREEP.COM OBITUARIES EWD TUESDAY, JAN, 8, 2002 5B Harry Nederlander: A star in Detroit theater clan "Nobody really had a title," Harry Nederlander said last September, recalling how he and his siblings grew up working in his family's Detroit theatrical enterprises. But here are some titles Mr. Nederlander earned over the course of a long and full life: impresario, sportsman, philanthropist, patriarch. A Bloomfield Hills resident, Mr.

Nederlander died of cancer Saturday at his other home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 84. Mr. Nederlander was the oldest of six children of the late David T. and Sarah Applebaum Nederlander, whose business interests now include the Fisher and Masonic Temple theaters in Detroit and nine Broadway theaters.

Mr. Nederlander was also a part-owner of the New York Yankees, having invested in the team in 1973. His lifelong passion for theater and sports was evident in a September interview with the Free Press on the occasion of the Fisher Theatre's 40th anniversary. With equal ease Mr. Nederlander remembered the first show that played the Fisher Gay and reminisced about a time Detroit Tigers star Hank Greenberg dropped in on a Nederlander family baseball game.

"My dad had five acres at Pine Lake" in Oakland County, he said. "We used to use certain trees on the acreage as first base, second base Hank one day says, think I can hit it in the lake. He hit it in the lake. He must have hit the baseball 150 yards." Born Sept. 5, 1917, in Detroit, Harry Jay Nederlander attended Detroit Country Day School, where he received letters in baseball, football and basketball, and then attended the University of Michigan.

Jerome Koss Businessman, former pilot LOCAL DEATHS Even as a teenager he was a formidable golfer, said Mr. Nederlander's only sister, Frances Nederlander Kohn: "When he was 14, a few of the grownups refused to play with him. He was just too good." Brothers Joseph, James, Fred and Robert Nederlander are all involved in the business. Mr. Nederlander headed the family's Detroit operations.

"He was a prince of a guy," said Shirl Harris, Nederlander Theatrical Corp. public relations director, who worked with Mr. Nederlander at the Fisher and at the Birmingham Theatre when he produced plays there in 1979-94. Mr. Nederlander, who served in the Army Ordnance Corps during World War II, was a board member of Beaumont Hospital and of the Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs, a member of the Bloomfield Hills Country Club and a former president of the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club and honorary chairman of its board.

Mr. Nederlander is survived by his wife, Marjorie; children Wayne Robert Nederlander, Kimberly Breech, Harry Jay (Skip) Nederlander Scott Nederlander and Kathryn Raft; his sister and brothers, and several grandchildren. Mr. Nederlander's remains were cremated. A memorial service is scheduled at 11 a.m.

Friday at Christ Church Cranbrook, Cranbrook and Lone Pine roads, Bloomfield Hills. Memorial donations may be made to the Wayne State University Apple Award (named for Mr. Nederlander's late mother), 5104 Gullen Mall, Wayne State University, Detroit 48202, or to the Michigan Association for Children with Emotional Disorders, 15920 W. Twelve Mile Road, No. 201, Southfield 48076.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Isidore Church, 18201 Twenty-three Mile Road, Macomb Township, where the body will lie in state for half an hour before the service. Entombment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township. Arrangements are by the Wujek-Calcaterra Sons Funeral Home, Shelby Township.

Ivy Adams Occupational therapist Ivy Adams Dr. Ivy MeNulty Adams, whose medical career included rehabilitation, biofeedback and occupational therapy, died Friday at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills. She was 70 and lived in Farmington Hills. She was the manager of occupational therapy for Patient Care of Michigan, practicing at the Bloomfield Hills Care Center; the Nightingale Ivy North and the Adams Father Murray homes, both in Warren, and the Avondale Convalescent Home, in Rochester. She retired a couple of years ago.

Dr. Adams developed the department of occupational therapy at Southfield Rehabilitation Hospital, where she was clinical director of physical, occupational and speech therapy. Dr. Adams also was a certified biofeedback practitioner. She earned her doctorate in occupational therapy at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1971, then continued at Wayne State.

Working on two degrees at once, she earned a master's degree in instruction development and another doctorate in instructional technology in physical medicine and rehabilitation. She also taught in the biomechanics department at Michigan State University. Dr. Adams was a world traveler and an artist. "She worked in oils and acrylies, and she did still-lifes and landscapes and beautiful self-portrait," her sister, Sarajane Schaefer, said Monday.

"She also did some impressionistic work." Other survivors include three daughters, Michele Paterson, Ivy Kruck and Roberta Durrant; four grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, 23720 Farmington Road, Farmington, with burial in Grand Lawn Cemetery, Detroit. BY MARTIN F. KOHN FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER Jerome Anthony Koss flew Army helicopters in the Vietnam War, was shot down three times and ended up with a crushed spinal column. But he recovered from his injuries and plunged into teaching other copter pilots to fly at a base in Texas. He was a captain in the Army and later joined the Michigan Air National Guard, where he took the rank of warrant officer so he could keep flying. He logged more than 2,300 hours piloting helicopters.

Mr. Koss died of a heart attack Friday at his home in Macomb Township. He was 58 and a longtime investment counselor with Roney Co. in Detroit. "I was his partner," his son, Ralph, also a financial adviser, said Monday.

"We worked together for the last five years." It was a sweet deal for Mr. Koss, who had a winter home in Melbourne Beach, Fla. "He had an office in his condo there, and with me being up here he could spend three months down there in the winter," his son said. Mr. Koss was a partner in Roney and when it merged with Raymond James Associates in 1999, he became a senior vice-president.

He graduated from De La Salle Collegiate High School in Warren before the war and earned a bachelor of business administration degree from Eastern Michigan University after the war. "He touched a lot of lives," his son said. "Between Kiwanis and AA and St. Joe's, he helped a lot of people." Mr. Koss was a former president of the Clinton Township Kiwanis Club, which cited him as Kiwanian of the Year.

A recovering alcoholic for 17 years, he counseled and spoke at meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous. He also sat on the board of the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Foundation, where he raised money for the group's hospitals and was named citizen the year by the foundation's Century Club. He belonged to the Leo XII Council of the Knights of Columbus, the Selfridge Air National Guard Base Community Council and the Italian-American Chamber of Commerce in Macomb Township. Survivors include wife of 34 years, Fran; two daughters, Constance Hansen and Lori Davis; mother, Cleo; a sister; a brother, and five grandchildren.

A result was a book published in 1968 by Mead and Mr. Byers, "The Small Conference: An Innovation in Communication." RUEB FRANK Age 65, January 5, 2002.
