The rains, spawned by two typhoons and a smaller storm in the past two weeks, are the worst since 1966. A spokesman for the U.S. Command said U.S. Marine aircraft had evacuated 2,900 Vietnamese civilians from the stricken area and the number was increasing. The U.S. 24th Military Corps at Da Nang established a disaster relief center. There was one report of fatalities, eight Vietnamese drowned in a hamlet 18 miles north of Chu Lai, but many localities had not been heard from. Forecasters said up to eight more inches of rain could be expected by Saturday morning. Heavy rains fell on Saigon for the second consecutive day, but the situation in the capital was not critical. • Slaying (Continued From Page 1) bushy hair, wearing a brown coat and gray trousers, and 5 feet 11 inches tall and 170 pounds. She also was enrolled in graduate courses at the New School for Social Research and The Bank Street School for Education. Miss Duchon is tho daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Charles Duchen of Des Moines. Her father is president of the Younker Brothers department store chain in Iowa. Miss Leary was a 1966 graduate of Des Moines St. Joseph Academy. A nun there said the girl was "very popular—well liked by everyone who knew her." The nun said she was involved in many activities and was a top scholar. The girl was president of the student council during her senior year and "one of the best presidents we've had—she organized everything," the nun said. Miss Leary's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Leary, moved to Okoboji soon after she graduated from the academy. Her father, who was president of the R. V. Leary Co. Inc., of Des Moines, died more than a year ago. Tho girl graduated last JVM from Smith College in Northampton, Mass., where she majored in history. Murphy was asked what effect he thought the mob action in San Jose would have on his campaign. "I don't see how it could hurt any," he replied. "These are the things I have geen working against." Before the episode, Nixon told his San Jose audience the Secret Service had informed him 900 protesters were outside. Newsmen thought there were considerably more, perhaps as many as 2,500. The President, who has repeatedly stated during the campaign that dissidents who shout obscenities and resort to violence do not represent a majority of young Americans, said in his statement: "I have been careful to point out that these are the actions of a violent few. It is important that all Americans keep this perspective. But the time has come to take the gloves off and speak to this kind of behavior in a forthright way. Freedom of speech and freedom of assembly can not exist when people who peacefully attend rallies are attacked with flying rocks." Bowler. Deceased: *i.
