Schrofe said the foundation, and not the Convention and Visitors Bureau, operates Sawdust City Days. Written comments about the celebration should be made to the foundation and not the visitors bureau, he said. allowing him to complete the trip in 90 minutes rather than the usual five hours by car. "It's a great timesaver and a great relaxer," he once said. David Early, one of Early's sons, said Wednesday his father had" a lifelong hobby of fry-ing small planes and an abiding interest in his many children and grandchildren.

Early died at River Falls Hospital Tuesday night of a heart attack. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, six sons, a daughter and 16 grandchildren. Early, a former legislator and emergency government director who commuted from northern Wisconsin to the Capitol by light plane to savetime, has died at age 75. Early, a Democrat from River Falls, represented the 30th Assembly District, including Pierce, Pepin and Buffalo counties, from 1970 until 1977 when be was named secretary of veterans affairs by the state Veterans Affairs Board. At the time the popular veterans home loan program had run short of funds. But Early's appointment ended less than three months later when the state Supreme Court ruled the board had fired illegally the previous secretary, John Moses, and reinstated Moses in the job. Acting Gov.

Martin Schrciber later appointed. Early emergency government director, a job he held until retiring in 1982.
