From Page IB certainly happens." The Tigers too often have only one of baseball's three phases working for them: pitching, hitting or defense. "There have been a lot of seasons here that it's been a problem to find two out of three phases of the game that work," said Easley, who's been on board for five full seasons in the Tigers streak of eight straight losing seasons. "We all know what the problems are. We're not able to ilo anything about it -as of right now." Weaver had left the clubhouse by the time reporters entered it after Pujols' post-game news conference. Who could blame him for not wanting to talk, after that bizarre first Inning? Jimmy Rollins began it with an infield single. Marlon Anderson looped a single to left-center. Bobby Abreu bounced a single to center that just got through the infield. Cleanup man Pat Burrell produced the first well-hit ball of the inning, a ground smash to center just out of the reach of a diving Easley. After Jeremy Giambi grounded out on a bang-bang play at first, bcott Ko len snuck a grounder past Weaver's glove and into center for a two-run single and a four-run rally. Philadelphia began the night with the major s worst road record (b-Zi) and the five wins had come by a com bined 13 runs. The Phillies had won one road game all year by more than two runs. Now they had given the talented Padilla a four-run bulge to take to the mound. 'Weaver (4-8, tied for the big-league lead m losses) exited after the tourth when Philadelphia hiked the lead to 7-0 with a three-run rally that featured two doubles and Rollins' solo homer. It was Weaver's shortest outing of this season or last season. YOUNG'S PAIN: Young left the game after the fourth inning because he fouled a ball off the top of his right foot, X rays were negative. Young said he didn t know if he could play tonight. Contact JOHN LOWE at 313-223-4053 or lowefreepress.com. '' Moore, a high-school shortstop from southern w California, will report to the Tigers' club in Florida's Gulf Coast rookie league after his graduation next week. , Tigers farm and scouting director Greg Smithy said he and Moore's adviser didn't have any" trouble reaching an agreement. "We were can--did with each other, and we quickly got tbl common ground," Smith said. Moore, 18, was due to fly from California to Detroit on Friday and to spend the weekend at Comerica Park to absorb the atmosphere of his new organization. Smith calls Moore "a total package" of baseball talents, someone who has "exciting ingredients." He could become a middle-of-the-order :i big-league hitter. Smith reiterated that Moore could eventually play third base. "H It's always hard to tell what amateur stats i mean. But Moore, a left-handed batter, hit .329 . this season for Cypress (Calif.) High School, with 11 homers in 76 at-bats. r i BIG DEBUT: Left-hander Mike Maroth won't i lack for cheers when he makes his big-league debut tonight in his start against Philadelphia. . I The group on hand to support him will include 1 his wife, Brooke, and flying in from Florida I his parents, Charlotte and Bill. ' ' r Maroth, acquired from the Red Sox three years ago for right-handed reliever Bryce ! Florie, went 8-1 in 11 starts this season at Triple 1 1 A Toledo. He replaces Seth Greisinger, who .i struggled in his last three starts. Greisinger is due to make his first start for Toledo next week; Maroth, who allowed an average of one run ner per inning at Toledo, said that when he i! pitches well, he gets all his pitches over and keeps the hitters off-balance. "If you can do that, ; it makes hitting a little harder," Maroth said. -, -, The Tigers had at least two other options to :: replace Greisinger: right-handed long reliever ! Jeff Farnsworth, a rookie who started all of last-". season in the minors, and Toledo right-hander Brian Powell, who's 7-1 with the Mud Hens.. Manager Luis Pujols said one reason the club ' went with Maroth is that it likes to have two left' handers in the rotation. Maroth joins Mark Redman to give the Tigers two left-handers in the rotation for the first time since Justin h Thompson and Glenn Dishman in July and t, August 1997. Vl-'lVt ERROR: Second baseman Damion Easley got,, the error, but third baseman Chris Truby takes the blame for Boston's unearned run in its one-, run win over the Tigers on Thursday. , ,, With two out in the seventh and speedster " Johnny Damon on second, Nomar Garcia parra sent an infield single up the middle. Truby ; said that if Easley had thrown to first, Damon would have scored. Easley threw to third in the w hopes that Damon rounded the bag too far. I got lost a little bit as far as where third base . was, I guess," Truby said. "I was expecting him to throw. It wasn t a terrible throw or anything like that. It was definitely something that I ' should have handled." "' "' TIGERS AVERAGES Through Friday Batting r:, PLAYER AB II H 28 38 HR RBI BB SB I SB BA ,. Youn 56 138 19 44 11 0 5 20 9 24 4 1-1 311 ,.
