You just keep going out there as much as you can." He laughed again. "If I can; I'll go out there." Every time Patterson pitches well, it means the Juan Gonzalez trade wasn't a washout.

Patterson came to the Tigers with Gonzalez and catcher Gregg Zaun for six players. None of those six including Justin Thompson, who threw his most recent big-league pitch with Detroit has done as much for Texas in the past two seasons as Patterson has done for the Tigers. He's 10-5 with a 3.49 ERA in two seasons, and he has gotten countless crucial outs late in victories. He has allowed only 25 of 106 inherited runners to score. Patterson is listed at 185 pounds.

The same thing holds true that Strelitz noticed when he scouted Patterson as a 140-pound-er in high school. "What I liked besides his toughness," Strelitz said, "is that he couldn't, throw the Tiall straight." His sinker is the pitch that gets him out of so many jams. About two months inta last season, Patterson hit something while running in the outfield and damaged his heel. "It got worse and worse," he said. "It hurt all year." His performance didn't show it.

And during the off-season, the Tigers didn't treat him like a risk. They gave him the first multiyear deal of his career: a three-year contract worth about $7 million. Don't expect him to be more eager to sit out with injuries just because he has a three-year contract. "It's still going to be hard," he said. "It's not going to get any easier." His history of injuries makes him especially grateful for the rich contract.

"I've played with injuries my whole life," he said. "I don't know when it's going to be over." Two days after he said this, he left his first appearance qthe exhibition season with back jain. That was 2V2 weeks ago, and he hasn't pitched in a game since. He was given a cortisone shot i the back last week, and now'he's throwing again in the bullpett He wants to be in a game soon. Given his history, he will be ready, for Opening Day two weeks from tonight.

"When you get older, the aches and pains are still going to be there," Patterson said. "I'm: not going to stop doing everything I can because I have some security. It's not the way I am. I'll do everything I can." TODAY'S GAMES $14,802 $14,310 $14,150 shoulder," Patterson said with the laugh of a man who has survived. "When I was in junior college, I Detroit vs.
