He was 87 and lived in West Bloomfield Township. The fund administered by the Jewish Federation was started earlier this year. "We chose this way to express our gratitude because we believe learning is basic to Jewish life," Mr.

Deutsch said at the time. "We'd like to see every family have the opportunity to educate their children as Jews and to participate in the Jewish community. "Besides, it feels good to give." He was the founder and former chairman of American Savings, at one time Michigan's largest state-chartered savings and loan. In 1946, he founded Citizens Mortgage of which he was president and chairman. He was a past president of the Michigan Savings Loan League.

Mr. Deutsch's philanthropy and service in the Jewish community were wide-ranging. In 19G7-68, he was chairman of the Allied Jewish Campaign, and was a past president of what is now the United Jewish Foundation. She had worked for Ameritech for 30 years, and retired in 1987 as manager of the department that investigates and resolves complaints of discrimination.
