In his annual care law Conservative members question main provision By Mark Sherman The Associated Press WASHINGTON The fate of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul was cast into deeper jeopardy Tuesday as the Supreme Court's conservative justices sharply and repeatedly questioned its core requirement that virtually every American carry insurance.

The court will now take up whether any remnant of the historic law can survive if that linchpin fails. The justices' questions in Tuesday's hearing carried deeply serious implications but were sometimes flavored with fanciful suggestions. If the government can force people to buy health insurance, justices wanted to know, can it require people to buy burial insurance? Cellphones? Broccoli? The law, pushed to passage by Obama and congressional Democrats two years ago, would affect nearly all Americans and extend insurance coverage to 30 million people who now lack it. The court focused on whether the mandate for Americans to have insurance "is a step beyond what our cases allow," in the words of Justice Anthony Kennedy.

But Kennedy, who often is the swing vote on cases that divide the justices along ideological lines, also said he recognized the magnitude of the nation's health care problems and seemed to suggest they would require a See Law, A-12 I State of the An It I Schmitt READ THE SPEECH ONLINE To read a copy of the 2012 State of the City address, click on this story at www.green baypress gazette.com. 41 r-- City address, Schmitt said the community must focus on education as a key to both a strong economy and a high quality of life. The crowd applauded loudly as Schmitt announced his commitment to making Green Bay a better-educated place. Northeast Wisconsin Technical College President Jeff Rafn, who was in attendance, said he was pleased to hear the mayor reinforce what residents normally hear only from educators that a college education is critical to success in the job market.

Rafn said he hoped the message would reach people with greater impact coming from a political leader who is outside the education field. "I'm really pleased that he's willing to step up to the plate and put some energy behind this," Rafn said. "That's certainly a factor." As was previously announced, WGBA, Channel 26, will be Green Bay's official Packers station. The Journal Broadcast Group owns WGBA. McCarren works for the Journal Broadcast Group as an announcer for the Packers Radio Network, and that may expand to TV. "We're talking, and there's a mutual interest," McCarren said. For sure, McCarren will continue as analyst on the Packers Radio Network for the 18th season.

"Unless somebody tells me different, yes," McCarren said Tuesday after WFRV announced that he would leave the station after 24 years.
