SPORTS WWW.GREENBAYPRESSGAZETTE.COM GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 2011 B-8 THE DAY IN SPORTS at 141 Ws back to Saturdays 1 Conard said. Thunderhill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay races on Saturdays with mostly IMCA-sanctioned divisions as does Shawano Speedway. But even without the sanctioning, the rules in the IMCA-style classes will remain the same as the area's sanctioned tracks. "Basically guys can come by us on Saturday nights and roll their cars off the trailer and be legal, just as if we were running IMCA," Conard said. Last year, when the track ran on Wednesday nights, drivers who were chasing state, regional or national IMCA points were aided with an extra night of racing.

While some drivers will stick with the IMCA sanctioning, others can take it or leave it. "I guess from my perspective, it doesn't make JOE VERDEGAN Racing at 141 are different in that there are large catwalks in the pit area and in the grandstand. The track also has a spacious sports bar, which can be inviting to fans when the weather is either too hot or too cold. The move has not come without some backlash, however. The track had run with IMCA sanctioning with many of its classes, including modifieds, sportmods and stock cars.

The track was denied sanctioning by IMCA last fall. "We had preferred to stay sanctioned, but IMCA basically has said there were too many unknowns with other area tracks running on Saturdays," NOTES NFL Mediation resumes in NFL dispute The NFL and its locked-out players started talking again, and they talked all day The only sign of progress or productivity, though, was the nine hours or so both sides spent in the federal courthouse in Minneapolis on Thursday. Sworn to secrecy about specifics of the court-ordered mediation, neither the league nor the players provided much insight about where they're at in their dispute over the division of this $9 billion business. They'll meet again today. Commissioner Roger Goodell, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft were among those on hand for the closed-door session with U.S.

Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan. NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith was joined by attorneys, linebackers Ben Leber and Mike Vrabel, as well as Hall of Fame defensive end Carl Eller. "We had a full day. It was constructive to get together," said Jeff Pash, the NFL's lead negotiator. "The chief magistrate judge is working very hard, and I give him a lot of credit for really trying to move the parties toward a solution." Neither he nor Goodell would elaborate on the day's events.

GOLF Cink, Henry lead after Na's meltdown J.J. Henry and former British Open champion Stewart Cink are atop the Texas Open leader-board after shooting 5-under-par 67s, but the spotlight belonged to Kevin Na during a historic meltdown on No. 9. Na set a PGA Tour low with a 16 on the par-4 ninth, chopping his way through a nightmarish hole during an otherwise solid first round. The South Korean was a combined 4 under on the other 17 holes to finish 8-over 80.

BASEBALL MLB may expand replay in 2012 Major League Baseball is leaning toward expanding replay for the 2012 season to include trapped balls and fair-or-foul rul ings down the lines, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press. Commissioner Bud Selig and a group of umpires discussed the extra video review at spring training and were in agreement, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter is still being discussed. Baseball began using replay late in the 2008 season, though only to check potential home run balls. New York Yankees reliever Pedro Feliciano has a torn capsule in his left shoulder and will get a second opinion before deciding if he should have season-ending surgery New York's left-handed specialist has been on the disabled list since the start of the season with what was described as a rotator cuff strain, but a contrast MRI showed the tear. Feliciano said Thursday he will see noted orthopedist James Andrews on Monday then choose a course of action, which could be surgery.

Feliciano also could have a shot in the shoulder and refrain from throwing for Vi months. ETC. Uncle Mo iffy for Kentucky Derby Uncle Mo has a gastrointestinal infection and may be a no-go for the Kentucky Derby on May 7. The early Derby favorite lost for the first time in the Wood Memorial on Saturday at Aqueduct, finishing third as the prohibitive 1-10 betting choice. The 2-year-old champion was given blood tests on Tuesday after his poor performance, and veterinarians discovered the infection.

Trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Mike Repole were told Uncle Mo could continue training while undergoing treatment. Pletcher said he still plans to ship Uncle Mo to Churchill Downs on Monday and give the colt two workouts before making a Derby decision. AREA UWGB hires Brooks as soccer assistant The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has hired Niki Brooks as assistant women's soccer coach. Brooks, who will work closely with the team's goalkeepers, has five years of college coaching experience, including with Idaho in 2010. Press-Gazette, wire services Eddie Muenster of Green Bay was one of the modified drivers who participated in the practice Wednesday at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, www.danlewisphoto.net took ninth in the IMCA modified feature at Marshalltown (Iowa) Speedway on Friday night.

Green Bay's Troy Jerovetz finished third in the IMCA Northern sportmod feature at Boone (Iowa) Speedway on Saturday night and was fourth in the main event at Benton County Speedway in Vinton, Iowa, on Sunday. HOWTO LIST Shawano's Tracy Wassenberg was 1 7th in the sportmod main at Vinton. Luxemburg practice: The practice session scheduled for tonight at Luxemburg Speedway has been canceled. "We added clay and it's just a wet, soupy mess out there right now," track manager Rick Goral said. "We'll just go with YOUR RESULTS that much difference to me," said Jared Siefert, last year's modified champion at 141.

Siefert will continue to race at the IMCA-sanctioned Luxemburg Speedway on Friday nights and at 141 on Saturdays. With the move back to Saturdays, some area asphalt drivers who parked their cars last year have decided to get back in the game, converting their race cars over to dirt. "I think from the standpoint of our local drivers and fans, the switch to Saturdays may help us out a ton," Conard said. "Especially with gas prices as high as they'll be this summer, we're counting on local fans and drivers to make this thing work. There are plenty of cars in the area to go around for everyone." Joe Verdegan Is a freelance writer who covers area racing for the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

The sprint car program will be held April 23, while the late model show, which will include modifieds and grand nationals, will be rescheduled later. Perhaps the most drastic change occurred at the track after the 2009 season, when the Vi-mile paved oval in Francis Creek was dug up and a banked -mile clay oval was built. After a season of hosting weekly racing on Wednesday nights, the Conards made another change, deciding to switch back to their old regular night of Saturdays. The season is scheduled to open Saturday, with racing to begin at 7 p.m.

"We took a long, hard look at things and, with our facility being privately owned, we felt it was in our best interest to go to Saturday nights," Bruce Conard said. Most area race tracks are county-owned facilities leased by independent promoters. The facilities AREA NEWS AND 141 notebook: Last year's track champions at the Francis Creek oval slated to open the area season at 7 p.m. Saturday are Jared Siefert of Green Bay (modifieds), Rod Snellenberger of Pulaski (stock cars), T.J. Smith of Menasha (grand nationals), Johnny Whitman of De Pere (sportmods), Ryan Brandes of Brillion (street stocks) and Pulaski's Sam Ambroses (sport 4s).

Siefert still was building his car late this week, and it likely won't be done in time for Saturday's opener, making many wonder if Siefert will borrow a ride. At a practice session Wednesday, 43 cars 14 modifieds, eight sportmods, six sport 4s, five street stocks, five late models, three stock cars, one hobby stock and one grand national showed up, Travelers: Fremont's Mike Wedelstadt finished second and Green Bay's Eric Van Iten SCOREBOARD BASKETBALL NBA FINAL EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic Division Pet GB y-Boston 56 26 .683 x-NewYorfc 42 40 .512 14 x-Ptiiladetphia 41 41 .500 15 New Jersey 24 58 .293 32 Toronto 22 60 .268 34 Southeast Division Pet GB y-Miami 58 24 .707 i-0nando 52 30 .634 6 x-AOanta 44 38 .537 14 Charlotte 34 48 .415 24 Washington 23 59 .280 35 Central Oivlsion Pet GB z-Chicago 62 20 .756 x-lndiana 37 45 .451 25 Milwaukee 35 47 .427 27 Detroit 30 52 .366 32 Cleveland 19 63 .232 43 WESTERN CONFERENCE Southwest Division Pet GB z-San Antonio 61 21 .744 X-Dallas 57 25 .695 4 x-Wemphis 46 36 .561 15 x-New Orleans 46 36 .561 15 Houston 43 39 .524 18 Northwest Division Pet GB y-0klahomaClty55 27 .671 x-Oenver 50 32 .610 5 x-Portland 48 34 .585 7 Utah 39 43 .476 16 Minnesota 17 65 .207 38 Pacific Division Pet GB y-LA.
