The ruling clears the way tor a divorce settlement with semipro volleyball player Elaine Lopez the sister ol Atlanta Braves catcher Javier Lopez. The Justices ruled, 4-3, that the agreement was invalid because Gonzalez and Lope; signed It in Baltimore Instead of Puerto Rico their legal residence and did not have It notarized, as required by Puerto Rican law. The couple married In 1994 and split in 1997 after Gonzalez began courting merengue star Olga Tanon.

Lopez's lawyer. Victor Rivera Torres, said he believed his client will get $10 million when the case returns to a lower court In the San Juan suburb ot Carolina. In November, Gonzalez lost an appeal in a paternity suit fifed by a fifth woman whom he began dating while still courting Tanon, who divorced him after less than a year of marriage. Gonzalez had to pay a $2-million divorce settlement and $100,000 annually in child support for their daughter. Tigers right-hander Masao Kida cleared uncondi- tional waivers and was sold to the Ortx Blue Wave in the pitcher's home country of Japan.

Kida, 31, ended his Tigers career with a 1 -0 record and 6.42 ERA in 50 games. This season, he was 0-0 with a 10.13 in two games. In 21 games at Triple-A Toledo, Kida was 2-1 with seven saves and a 2.16. Kida signed a two-year contract for S3 million In December 1998. The Yankees lead the league with a .714 percentage when scoring at least three runs. The Tigers have failed to score at least three runs in virtually half their games (27 of 55). That is 12 more games with fewer than three runs than any other AL' team. Every other AL team has had between seven" and 15 games in which it has scored fewer than three runs. In few of the Tigers' low-scoring losses would, one more run have mattered.

Among the Tigers' 23 losses in which they've scored fewer than three runs, only four have been by one run. CLARK back SOON: First baseman Tony Clark might return by early next week. Clark is due to begin a rehabilitation assignment tonight with Toledo. On Thursday's open date, Clark reported to, Comerica Park and had his second encouraging ses- sion of right-handed batting practice in as many days! The switch-hitting Clark has been on the disabled list for four weeks because of a rib-cage strain that prevented him from swinging right-handed. The Tigers' projected everyday lineup has started only three games because of injuries and suspensions Presuming no one is injured before Clark returns, re-entry will mean the lineup is back intact.

Rocker was sent to Triple-A Richmond on Monday. The reliever balked at the assignment and delayed reporting until Thursday. Rocker arrived at Toledo International Airport about 1 p.m. Rocker, the last passenger to exit the plane, was whisked away in a car driven by Braves assistant general manager Frank Wren.

Rocker then joined his new teammates at the Holiday Inn. By 5 p.m., Rocker was in the bullpen, throwing for 20 minutes to catcher Mike Hubbard under the watchful eye of pitching coach Mike Alvarez. Rocker didn't pitch in the game, won by the Mud Hens, 10-4. After the game, manager Randy Ingle said will pitch tonight in the finale of the series against the Tigers' top farm club. Rocker, whose derogatory comments against minorities and gays that appeared in a Sports Illustrated article got him a suspension to begin the season, angrily confronted the SI writer last Sunday.

But Wren said it was Rocker's poor pitching that earned him a trip to the minors. "He's here because he needs to get more consistency with his command and control," Wren said. "Once he does, he'll be back in Atlanta. For now he's down here for 10 days on an option, unless we have an injury at the major league level." Rocker might rejoin the Braves next Thursday in Pittsburgh. On their 15-minute ride to the hotel, Rocker and Wren discussed security and safety measures that were in place for his appearance.

"We talked about what he could expect," Wren said, "because obviously things are different than they are in the major leagues, like a tunnel where you come out to the field. I just wanted him to know what to expect. I think he's disappointed like any other player that comes from the major leagues to the minor leagues. "But I think as he got dressed and ready to go out to the field, I could see his mind-set change. He's ready to get back to the big leagues." More than once he shouted expletives after throwing pitches in the dirt. Before warming up, Rocker, escorted by four officers, received a standing ovation from most of the 6,212.

He signed autographs before and after the national anthem. On Sunday, Rocker encountered Jeff Pearlman, the SI writer whom Rocker blames for his troubles. Rocker told an Atlanta radio station, "(Pearlman), of course, put the blame on me, saying, 'It was your fault. Richmond players seemed to support the left-hander. "What he said was a mistake, but it's in the past," third baseman Wes Helms said.
