"According to what I was told today, the Blair board will be sending a letter of consideration," she said. Hanson stid the matter has "been put on hold" until the Whitehall board's July 8 meeting.

B's Place, organized by parents, teachers and students from Memorial, North, Regis and Altoona high schools, is in Negrini's London House on London Road. It features a separate entrance and adult supervision. The "senior-high establishment," as organizers call the center, is open Monday through Thursday evenings with no admission charge.

On Friday and Saturday there is a $2 cover charge if entertainment is scheduled. So far things have gone well, Ripp said, noting that adult volunteers have provided good supervision. "Students are telling us that this is what they were asking for, and community groups are still offering to sponsor entertainment," he said. Organizers weren't sure the center would attract enough teens to stay open during the summer, but the crowd of 265 people on opening night was "super, Ripp said, and since then center use has been "beyond our expectations." He said from 80 to 200 high school students have used the. center on recent, evenings. The idea for the center evolved from "The Chemical People," a program broadcast on public television in 1983.

The two-part series was designed to bring concerned people together and offer guidelines for combating teen-age alcohol and drug abuse. Committees, such as the group that organized the teen center, were formed after the broadcast. Gloria Visitin said Monday that a tribal member complained that procedures were not clear and uniform at the tribe's at-large polling places in Milwaukee, St.

Paul, La Crosse, Chicago and Madison. Tribal members in the at-large districts will vote again Aug. 3 for two members of the business committee and for tribal chairman. Merlin Redcloud Jr. beat eight other candidates in the race to replace Kenneth Funmaker who was removed as tribal chairman after his conviction on welfare fraud charges.

"There really hasn't been any serious talk about this at all" she said. "But with enrollment down, taxes up and state aids decreasing, we Know something has to be done." Hanson said the recommendation of consolidation came in a letter from Leland Chenoweth, a member of the Blair school board. The Whitehall school board met Monday night and discussed the letter. In the letter, Chenoweth claims a combined district could reduce costs by about 1800,000 a year.

The reduction would come, in part, from eliminating duplicated courses, more efficient busing, reductions in administrative costs and increased enrollments. His proposal calls for the senior high school to be in Whitehall and the junior high in Blair. Elementary schools would stay the same. "The thing the board is most concerned about is receiving a formal request from the Blair board to consider the options," Hanson Gunman holds up Prairie Farm store PRAIRIE FARM A man armed with a handgun held up a grocery store in Prairie Farm Sunday night and fled with an undetermined amount of cash. He pointed a gun at the owner and directed him to open the cash register 'and put cash in a paper bag he held out. The suspect fled south on foot, according to the Sheriff's Department. The suspect is described as being about 5 feet 7 inches, thin and in his early- to mid-20s. "Our problem is not one of only higher taxes but how small can you get and still offer some kind of competitive quality education?" Hanson said. "We are offering good programs now, but how much longer can we continue to do that?" Hanson said consolidation discussions "get to be very complicated. The most important thing is that there have to be enough people in both districts that want to do this, or it just won't work."
