KM-William Godwin, Engllih novelist, born: XTW William Charlea Macready, tragedian, bom Id London; died 1U73. Uacready was one of tbe principala in an affair that came near being an international epiaode.

After winning high laurel as Vlrginiua, R. chard III and oth ar noted characteri of the greatest dramatists, be appeared in the leading cltlea of the United States. That was in IS48 and 1MB. During his stay in this country he became Involved In a dispute with America's favorite tragedian. Edwin Korrest.

The bitterness spread among friends and admirers of both actors. It culminated in a riot in Astor place, May, 1840. Partibans of Forrest warned Macrcady not to appear in New York. Under the promise of protection by his admirers he opened a farewell engagement. The theater was mobbed and 22 persons were killed.

Ut7 Claude Perrin Victor, duke of Delluno, created marshal of Franc by Napoleon on the leld of Frledland. died; born 1764. 18n Emancipation of Russian serfs by imperial decree of Ciar Alexander II. 180ft Dr. W.

P. Palmer, antiquarian and writer, died In Richmond. 1897 Nelson YVhratcroft, well known actor and dramatic teacher, died in New York city. 18(0 Rear Admiral George Dewey became fall admiral by the operation of the law reviving that rank. Bullek has evidently justified his reputation as "the bulldog." There is so much mud in the Omaha municipal campaign that thespring rains can be very easily dispensed with.

How the little American will shrivel up when he reads that Uncle Sam has sixty-one was-ships in course of construction. Since the relief of Kimerley and Ladysmith the public appears to have forgotten all about the revolution in Kentucky. Talk on the governorship thus fails confined principally to C. H. Dietrich, of Hastings.

But of course there will be others. There has been nothing to complain of regarding the loyalty or the fighting quality of Britain's Irish brigade in South Africa. The place to settle the license question is at the polls without any "en-tagling alliances" with candidates or other questions of any kind or character. The eagerness with which the fusion-ists are making D. Clem Deaver an issue Indicates that they have finally concluded that it is not well to ignore small things.

Carnegie has concluded to define his position politically. He declares that he is still a republican. Having been an assistant democrat during the past year his explanation is timely. JOLIET is so well pleased with the Chicago drainage canal that the en terprising people of that burg are already talking of extending it to make a ship canal to the Mississippi. There Is nothing the matter with Porto Rico In the eyes of the American congress and there is reason to believe that Porto Ricians will admit that there is nothing the matter with the American congress.

The public debt was reduced nearly seven milliondollars during February, from which it will be taken for granted without deliberation or discussion that a republican administration is incorape-tant to run the business of the country. The attorney of the St. Paul and Omaha road files an answer with the iuter-state commission to the charges of the Norfolk Business Men's association, in which he asserts that the latter have not told the truth. This is serious. Railroads have enough to answer for without being lied A hill has been introduced in the house by Congressman Neville that fixes a salary for fourth-class postmasters and gives them a monthly allowance and other expenses in addition to the fees that they now receive.

Of course congress will not do a thing to that bill but smother it with neatness and inelegant dispatch. The, action of the president on Friday in sending to congress a message requesting that body to pass a bill appropriating some two million dollars for the use and the relief of the Island of Porto Rico, and the promptness with which a bill was introduced and passed with but forty minutes discussion, almost took the breath of the democrats. Among the democrats, populists and silver republicans who voted for the bill the names of Nebraska members are conspicuous for their absence. Scurrcz says that the teach- ings of Washington and Lincoln are derided as antiquated nursery rhymes. Ti: old tiiau is evidently trying to be facetious but has (ailed.

He might I add that a sect to which he belongs lias been making it a practice to misquote and misinterpret the sayings of these great men to serve the little purposes of a number of little Americans. The recent disposition manifested at Merlin for the German empire to remain on good terms with England is wise in its time. Were Germany to assist in the eastern scheme to break down the Mritish empire, she would alter that had been accomplished have to bear the brunt of all the pressure of the eastern question herself. With hostile France in the rear, Russia looming up like a terrible glacier in front and all of the smaller fry only interested in saving themselves and getting a crumb from the tables of the autocrats, Germany would have more grief than her rulers ever dreamed of. The national secretary of the Anti-Saloon league, Howard P.

Russell, when in Omaha a few days ago organizing a local branch of the league, made the following statement to a representative of the Bee: "The Anti-Saloon league must not be mistaken for un organization for the extirpation of the saloon. What we want to bring about is simply a strict enforcement of the present laws, which, I understand, in Nebraska, cover the ground pretty thoroughly, by building up a public sentiment that will sustain it and co-operating with public officers in sympathy with the movement. We hope to have a strict enforcement of the provisions against Sunday open ing and keeping open at night after the specified hours, as well as the sell ing of liquor to minors and NEHKASKA nkws notes. Friday evening the Hub's war correspondent betook himself to one of Manager Napper's koppes, wrapped his portable bomb-proof about him, settled himself behind the shade of a big opera hut and sniffed the battle from afar. The action opened with a piano solo by Miss Mary Bailey.

An Instrumental duet by Misses Lyon and Tebbits, a violin solo by Miss Dot Black, a vocal solo by Miss Ernestine Tabor, piano solo by Miss Mills and a guitar and mandolin number by Harry and Arthur Evans were inter spersed throughout the program at appropriate intervals. All the musi cal numbers were excellent and hearti ly received by the audience. Master Frank Willis acquitted himself credit ably in a declamation. The chief interest, however, centered upon thecadet companies in their first appearance under arms. The cadet company has but recently been equipped with U.

S. rifles, which nevertheless they handled like veterans. Their first exhibition was in the setting up exercises which they performed under the commands of Captain Walter Jones, First Lieht. Leary and Second Lieut. Forehand, in turn.

The drill was splendidly done and explains In large measure the erect and soldierly bearing which our citizens have noticed on the part of the cadets as they have appeared on the streets day by day. Company drill in foot movements and manual of arms followed under command of Major Patch, and the precision and uniformity with which the various evolutions were performed was a revelation to the audi ence, which manifested its appreciation by frequent and vigorous applause. Not less pleasing was the drill by Company composed of the high school girls. As they faced the audience in company front dressed in their neat fitting dark blue uniforms, they looked capable of capturing a whole and the audience surrendered at discretion. The commissioned offloers1 of company are L.

Patch is major of the Cadet corps and to his thorough and enthusiastic Work is due to pro ficiency which has been attained in drill and discipline.

The entertainment closed with a camp scene, at night, with the sentinel pacing his beat, while in the background the boys indulged in larks, including the stealing of two roosters which evidently did not belong to the cadets, for they steadfastly refused to ti.rht. Meade with twenty men and Lieut. Boyle with ten men were detailed to disperse a post of Filipinos, about one hundred in number, who were in a position to make trouble. Under cover of night the two squads approached the Filipinos from opposite directions, making a wide detour. Lieut.
