Republican Newspaper This Date In History- -Dec. 1, 1797-Oliver Wolcott, "signer" for Connecticut, died in Litchfeld; born 1726. 1818 Commodore Joshua ney, distinguished naval offcer and hero of the defense of Washington, died in Pittaburg; born in Baltimore 11 o0. 1825-Alexander I of Russia, temporary of Napoleon, died; born 1777. 1830 Heron, tragic tress, born in Ireland; died Matilda Heron.

in New York city 1877. 1848-A horror equal to the tragedy of the Black Hole of Calcutta perpetrated on the steamboat Londonderry between Liverpool and Sligo; nearly 200 passengers were penned up in the steerage cabin, 18 feet long by 11 wide and 7 high, and shut out from all air; in few minutes 72 were suffocated or trampled to death. 1884-Hon. William Lewis Dayton, United States minister to France, died in Paris; born 1807. 1894-Rev.

Dr. Henry Storrs, a prominent Presby. terian divine at Orange, N. died; born 1828. 1805-James Harvey Partridge, educator and author, died at Cranford, N.

born 1810. JUDGE SULLIVAN'S majority in the twelfth judicial district is exactly 1,539. Which simply leads the Hubto remark that the "etorm center of populism" is still in business at the old stand. THE governor of Alaska asks for statehood for his territory. He will get it, nit.

There is possibly a chance for Arizona and New Mexico but Alaska will have to remain out in the 000 more votes at the recent election that in 1899 is sufficient explanation of Holcomb's big majority. The stay-athome pops of 1898 took a day off and did their worst. cold. THE fact that Nebraska polled: NEBRASKA is still in evidence as the producer of great men. Comptroller Dawes, whose financial plan meets with the approval of leading of financiers, was formerly a lawyer at Lincoln, and at that time had not given evidence of special talents in the line ofhis present work.

IT develops that in the partition of the Samoan islands the United States got a great deal the best of the bargain in acquiring title to the island of Tutuila. The island posseses an excellent harbor, is susceptible of a better state of cultivation and is better located. The division is perfectly satisfactory to the three -England, Germany and the United States, and that is saying a great deal, too. THE handful of free silver republicans who have been conferring at Chicago concluded to go in with the democrats next year, acting on the supposition of course that free silver will again be the democratic slogan. That action however is not necessary.

There is no such thing as a free silver republican and they will simply act as democrats in the "'entered apprentice" IT is said that a protest comes from the English government, through its ambassador at Washington, against the organization of expeditions in this country for recruiting the Boer army. The protest is well taken. Any individual, acting for himself, has a perfect right to go where he pleases and fight with whom he pleases, but the organization and equipment of armed parties to fight against a nation with which we are at peace is quite a different thing. THE new year is likely to 800 the money in circulation in the United States close to the $2,000,000,000 mark. The figures on November 1 were 963,716,148.

Add to this the 000 put into circulation through the redeeming of outstanding bonds by the treasury department, and the constant increase in the country's circulation as registered from month to month and it seems likely that we will soon be confronted with a circulation of $2,000, 000,000, notwithstanding Bryan's oft repeated statement since 1896 that no increase was possible without the free coinage of silver, and at which time the country's circulation was but $1,627,055 614. THE Democratic Washington Post, replying to a suggestion of the New York Times that the democracy should, in the coming campaign, make a "determined assault on the 52 per cent. Dingley tariff that now plunders the consumer, oppresses our most active industries, and obstructs our expanding commerce." calls attention to the fact that the exports during the first two years of Dingley republican tariff were $1,456,505,532, and in the first two years of Wilson-Gorman tariff but 81,690.145.103. democratic, "would it be wild applause or 8 hoarse hoot that would greet the charge of 'obstructing our expanding commerce' by a law under which exports bave expanded :768,360,529 in two years?" Gov. POYNTER has concluded take a hand in the killing of the deserting soldier in Sarpy county.

He has called on the authorities that county to investigate the killing of the deserter Morgan by corporal Fair and private Jockens, and it is stated that if they fail to do so then the attorney general of the state will undertake an investigation. It will be remembered that Morgan 'was 8 deserter who had escaped from the guardhouse. Pursued by Fair and Jockens he was ordered to halt but did not obey. The fourth time the command was given, the guard fired and the fugitive was killed. Here is an interesting point: They followed strict military regulations, and had they failed to shoot when they did.

and had they permitted the fugitive to escape, they would have been subject to court martial and would have been imprisoned for breach of Where the authority of the general government ceases and the authority of the state government begins is a hair-splitting question, but in this instance the rights in the case are apparently with the military and not with the civil authorities. ANOTHER POLITICAL PARTY. Plan to Organize the Union Reform PartyReferendum to Be the Basis. Lincoln Journal: Lucien Stebbins of Lincoln county, C. E.

Bentley of Lancaster, who was the presidential candidate of the national party in 1896, R. A. Hawley, E. A. Gerrard of Platte county and other Nebraska reformers are not satisfied with the recent victory for "reform' and they.

have undertaken the task of starting another reform party in Nebraska. The name of the party is to be the union reform party which was started on its career in Cincinnati in March, based on initiative and referendum, a principle which the populist party advocated in the days prior to the organization of the fusion forces. If the prediction made by Mr. Harrington of North Platte that the populist party is to go out of existence and give place to the democratic party, turns out to be correct, the members of the union reform party hope to secure a large following from among those of the populists who will decline to be swallowed up. A call for a meeting to organize the party has been issued.

The meeting is to be held at Hastings, November 28. The call is issued "for a conference to unite the reformers of all the parties in the state of Nebraska into one party." It reads as follows: "Believing it is essential that the reformers of all parties who want the best possible government and a means to secure it should unite for that purpose; and, that the union reform party organized at Cincinnati March 1st, 1899, and based upon direct legislation through the initiative and referendum is a simple and at the time a very broad basis for such a union, that it is the only one on which this desired union can be accomplished without compromise or the loss of a single principle by the individual; and, that the time has now come for such union: therefore we, whose names are hereto attached unite in making the following call: "To the People of the State of Nebraska: "All those who believe in direct legislation through the initiative and referendum as the best and the speediest means of securing a 'government of, for and by the and that a union of all reformers into one party is a necessity at this time, are hereby called to meet in state conference in Dutton hall, Hastings, Nebraska, Thursday, December 28th, 1899, at 9 a. m. for the purpose of consummating an organization upon the lines indicated in this call to be known as the union reform party of Nebraska, and to provide for organization in every county and precinct in the state." The call announces that further information can be secured by address. Asa Taylor, state organizer, union reform party, 919 South Thirteenth street, Omaha.
