The victims of the outbreak suffered from salmonellosis, a form of food poisoning, she said.

All were among about 800 people at a social gathering in Taylor June 18, she said. Byrns said, to the best of her knowledge, all 10 people who were hospitalized have been released. Because of the vast menu at the gathering and the number of people involved, she said, the exact cause of the infection may never be known. Meat, salads, eggs and milk were served, and any of those can carry salmonellosis, Byrns said. The department is concerned about secondary transmissions of the' 'infection.

People can be carriers of the infection for three weeks, Byrns said. The virus can be spread by improper hygiene, but it is not airborn, she said. Byrns said her department is trying to contact all who attended the gathering because those who did not become ill could be carriers. A stool culture is the only way to find out if a person is carrying the virus. "We're inundating the state lab with stool cultures," she said.

A representative from the State Department of Health and Social Services was expected in Jackson County today to help with the investigation. People who were at the gathering and have not been contacted by the Jackson County Public Health Department are being asked to call the Police Report City of Eau Claire Break-ins BUSINESS, Short Stop Grocery, 1719 Western Ave. Entry gained by breaking window. Pre-trial conference slated in Press Company libel case A pretrial conference has been scheduled for Aug. 4 in a libel case involving the Eau Claire Press publishers of the Leader-Telegram, and the family of Bruce Ogren. The family filed suit in January alleging the Leader- Telegram had published a story that contained false and defamatory information about the family, which was not corrected in accordance with state law. The story originated from the death of Bruce Ogren, 21, who died July 26 when he either fell or jumped off the Madison Street bridge.

The story in question was published Aug. 5, 1982. It described as a man struggling to cope with cerebral palsy and reported that he had been treated for suicidal tendencies. The Leader-Telegram printed a letter sent by the family's attorney demanding retraction. The attorney, however, said in the suit that publication of the letter did not constitute retraction.

The case was assigned to Chippewa County Circuit Court Judge Roderick Cameron. department at 284-4301.
