Specialty Section Page 2 new language No era has been without its sla words used singly or in phrases and which carry special meanings. As years ago, most slang is short- lived. Following are a few examples: cake-eater (young girl toll it to Sweeney; mump (fraud): oh, you bull (policeman); heater (gun): 3 sheets in the wind (intoxicated); needle a drink (add alcohol). Slang always has drawn criticism from men of literature. Ambrose Bierce, an American journalist, once wrote of slang: "It is the speech of him who robs the literary garbage cans on their way to the 5 Today, however, there is an entirely new type of slang, stemming from drug abuse.

Not even the prohibition era produced as many words and phrases as being heard today in the world of narcotics. The Drug Action Committee of North Royalton. has produced a "dictionary" of the special language in vogue Early speech problems no worry, ByGAYPAULEY NEW YORK There's no need to worry about a toddler's lisp. But do worry if it continues into the seventh or eighth year. The lisp or other speech problems in childhood can signal real trouble ahead.

Catch such trouble quickly. "It would be unrealistic if we expected a child to be able to say the 'S" sound before he was 3 or 4," says John E. Bryant, an authority on speech defects. "This does not mean, however that he cannot be helped to master all or most of the sounds of speech before he reaches 7 Vz. Speech develops in various stages from the "early cries of discomfort caused by hunger, pain and wet diapers" until at about age 2 the child begins using speech to communicate.

But there are problems which can interfere with normal speech development, says Bryant. In such instances, parents should seek professional advice "for the longer the speech disorder remains uncorrected. the more difficult it becomes to Bryant discusses speech problems in detail in a new publication from the Public Affairs Committee, a New York-based non- prof it educational organization. Bryant is director of speech and hearing services at the Mid-Island Speech and Hearing Center, Commack. N.Y., and the publication is called "Helping Your Child Speak Bryant says that causes of speech are numerous, but the major types come from organic physical, functional, or psychological.

Under organic, lists causes such as deafness or hearing problems, since a child learns to talk by listening to others, clefts of the palate, improper bite malocclusion, brain injury, cerebral palsy, and deformities of the mouth, throat or larynx. Functional causes could be poor health during the first 2 years of life, lack of motivation to learn, inadequate teaching, imitation of poor speech and immaturity. Or. psychologically, a child may react with frustration to the unrealistic standards set by his parents, which can lead to delayed speech or to stuttering. The child of an over- ly-prdtective parent "who anticipates his every need" may find it unnecessary to talk.

Bryant frowns on those who suggest a child will "outgrow" a speech disorder. "Unfortunately, if their children do have true speech problems, the chances are they will he savs. WILL IT SPREAD?
