AB TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 1997 Money THE SALINA JOURNAX Plains states reap riches of bountiful crop By The Associated Press WASHINGTON — A good corn crop helped give six Plains states the best income growth in the nation last year. By contrast, income growth in Hawaii and Alaska failed to even keep up with inflation, the Commerce Department said Monday. For the nation as a whole, per capita income grew 4.5 percent. That was down from 5.2 percent in 1995 but it nevertheless was more than double the 2.2 percent inflation rate as measured by the department's personal consumption Expenditures index. •; Tthe best income growth occurred mainly in the Plains: North Dakota, 11.2 percent; South Dakota, 10 percent; Iowa, 7.9 percent; Nebraska, 7.4 percent; Minnesota, 6.8 percent; and Kansas, 6.5 percent. V FAST FOOD Restaurant company sold Hardee's chain sold to California company that owns Carl's Jr. By NOAM NEUSNER Bloomberg News Salina's Hardee's restaurant might be serving a new menu later this year because of the purchase of the fast-food chain by CKE Restaurants. CKE, which operates the Carl's Jr. hamburger chains, said the $327 million purchase gives it a coast-to-coast presence in the United States and will result in restaurants that will serve Hardee's breakfast menu and Carl's Jr.'s lunch and dinner selections. Anaheim, Calif.-based CKE, which had sales of $742 million last year, will pay Imasco Ltd. the net book value of 788 company-owned and 2,364 franchised Hardee's restaurants. Among those company-owned restaurants is the Salina store at Broadway and Crawford streets. Fred Serrault, general manager of the Salina restaurant, said he doubts the menu would change before fall. "They are testing the new menu in Illinois right now so we don't know when, or even if, there will be a change," he said. Salina's Hardee's was owned by Hutchinson-based Alliance Restaurant Corp. until January 1996 when Imasco bought it, Ser- rault said. Jacques Kavafian, analyst with Research Capital Corp. of Toronto, said Imasco is "getting an OK price for Hardee's." The sale does not include Fast Food Merchandisers, which had 1996 earnings of $23 million, Imasco said. The unit will continue to supply Hardee's company-owned restaurants. Rocky Mount, N.C.-based Hardee's Food Systems had $2.98 billion in sales last year. CKE said it hopes to improve sales at Hardee's restaurants. The average sales at a Carl's Jr. outlet is $1.1 million. Average sales at Hardee's is $918,000, 30 percent from breakfast sales. "Teaming Carl's Jr.'s char- broiled burgers with Hardee's breakfasts enables us to showcase each chain's strengths," said CKE Chief Executive William Foley II. T RETAIL Stage Stores to purchase Anthonys chain of stores By ALF ABUHAJLEH The SaUna Journal Two clothing department stores with outlets in central Kansas have announced plans to merge their operations this summer. Houston-based Stage Stores will pay about $78 million to buy the common stock of Oklahoma City- based Anthonys department stores. Michael McCreery, vice chairman of C.R. Anthony, Anthony' parent company, said the department stores will be converted to Stage and Bealls stores. There are 19 Anthonys stores in Kansas, including Concordia, Russell and Great Bend. Stage Stores has a retail outlet in Central Mall. McCreery said Anthonys' headquarters and distribution center in Oklahoma City will be phased out over time, but said there Will be few store closings. "There are not that many mar^ kets where we overlap," he said. "By combining the two companies we hope to achieve significant cost savings in 1998." The company is projected to have more than $1 billion in annual sales at some 550 stores, he said, Both Stage and Anthonys Sell brand-name clothes for men, women and children. "The stores are similar in what they sell and complement each other geographically as well,"'McCreery said. "The changes will not be significant (to the Customers.)" ~ As part of the transaction, Stage Stores will assume about $15 million of C.R. Anthony's debt. The acquisition is slated to be completed by early July, McCreery said. NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE MARKETS Ntme Dtv.
