PAGE TWO fARK.V COURIER NEWS MAT IT. MM Senators Begin Probe Of New Mexico Election ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. (AP) - The chairman of the Senate Elections subcommittee contends the group doesn't want to Interfere with New Mexico elections, but "we're going to do the job we've been given." The subcommittee, made up of Sen. Barrett (R-Wyo), chairman; Sen, Henntngs (D-Mo) and Potter (R-Mich) arrived by plane from Washington late yesterday to look into the dispute over one of New Mexico's Senate seats. Republican Patrick Hurley Is contesting the election of his opponent, Sen. Dennis Chavez (D-NM). The Senate decided upon a recount, but District Judge R. P. Deacon Arledge, Democrat, told clerks of Bernallllo, Sandoval and Valencia Counties, all m his district, not to release ballot boxes and election records except by his order. The next step -was the subcommittee's orders to Arledge and the county clerk of Bernalillo County to deliver ballots, ballot boxes, ballot box keys and voting records when the formal subcommittee session opened today. If they didn't, a possible contempt of the Senate charge hung over (heir heads. Late yesterday, throe motions were filed asking the subcommittee to modify its orders. Atty. Gen. Richard Robinson declared the group wits upsetting New Mexico special election routine. Arledge stated he wanted to cooperate with the subcommittee, but he believed procedure should he set up so It doesn't interfere with New Mexico special elections. And a motion filed for Bernalillo County Clerk May Cleghorn complained that if she obeyed one order, she would be disobeying the other.
