Austin American-Statesman C3 Tuesday, April 7, 1987 Texas to release report Associated Press VT XlX COLLEGE STATION Results of an in-house investigation into alleged NCAA football violations at Texas are being released by the school Thursday, a spokesman said Monday. The investigation was launched in 1985 after published reports alleging quarterback Kevin Murray received $3,550 in 1983-84 from Dallas school booster Rod Dockery for cleaning printing presses, school spokes two Southwest Conference championships. The release of the report by Texas which could be up to 1,000 pages, comes in the wake of numerous open records law requests and lawsuits, said James B. Bonds, the school's deputy chancellor for legal and external affairs. The state attorney general's office in February ordered the University of Houston, another conference school, to release results of a similar investigation of its football program.

That investigation indicated former head Coach Bill Yeoman paid some of his players up to $500 cash depending on need. A Baytown booster said he helped raise as much as $10,000 for Yeoman, who resigned after heading the Cougars for 25 years. Texas President Frank Vandiver, a defendant in lawsuits filed by the Dallas Times-Herald and Fort Worth Star-Telegram, announced last November that the investigation was complete, and the school's only copy of the document had been delivered to the NCAA. He said only "minor problems" were uncovered and has declined further comment. The internal inquiry at Texas was handled by Arno W.

Krebs Jr. and Otway B. Denny both Texas graduates and members of the Houston law firm of Fulbright Jaworski. In February, the NCAA banned Southern Methodist's football program for the 1987 season and limited the Mustangs to only seven conference games since 1988 along with other restrictions after an investigation showed a booster slush fund of $61,000 was used to pay 13 players. Texas Tech's football program also was found to have violated NCAA recruiting violations and was stripped of three scholarships for the 1987 season.

Texas announced its investigation, done in conjunction with the NCAA, in March which showed 62 allegations in 19 areas from 1980-86 stemming from loans and gifts being made to football players. Kevin Murray man Lane Stephenson said. Two former employees of Dockery have told the NCAA that Murray never performed the work for which he was paid, a possible violation of NCAA rules. Last month, Murray announced he would forego his final year of collegiate eligibility and make himself available for the NFL draft. Petkovsek certainly appreciated it because his 22-2 career record almost included two losses to Dallas Baptist.

The junior right-hander from Beaumont gave up a run in the last inning on a triple and Brian Ford's RBI groundout but got his sixth strikeout to end the game. He started strongly by setting down nine of the first 10 big Indians who came in with a team batting average of .391. Then came the sixth, Petkov-sek's personal Waterloo. Protecting a 3-1 lead, Petkovsek gave up two runs on a sharp RBI single by James Picha and a wild pitch. Although he escaped further damage with a groundout with two in scoring position, he still hasn't shaken the sixth-inning blues.

In that infamous inning, Petkovsek has now allowed 16 hits and 13 runs on six such occasions this season. The sixth-inning totals for his last three starts alone read 11 hits and 11 runs. Short of skipping from the fifth to the seventh, Petkovsek is at a loss. "The sixth inning got me again," he said. "I'd better figure it out quick.

I'm hoping it doesn't get so bad that Coach Gus takes me out after the sixth inning." The Abilene sophomore walked the first three batters of the game but pitched out of the jam and gave up just one hit the first 5 innings.

"It was the first time I got my fastball where I wanted," said Suggs, who combined with Curry Harden and Dale Ray for a five-hitter. "I feel like I'm coming along." In the first game, the Horns managed just six hits off DBU's Larry Lee, a relief pitcher making his first start of the year, but three of them were for extra bases. "They are a good ball club, and we didn't come out ready to play a good ball club," said Cisarik, whose homers were his first in 28 games since March 3. "They woke us up." Newkirk's RBI double in the sixth inning brought in Mike Patrick to break a 3-3 tie. Lindauer then singled in Newkirk for a run STEEL-BELTED RADIAL The Texas Longhorns were sluggish in their approach Monday night but were sluggers at the plate.

Brian Cisarik had clothesline home runs in each game in Texas' 5-4, 12-2 doubleheader sweep of Dallas Baptist as the Horns clubbed Indian pitching for 20 hits, seven of them for extra bases. The sweep, Texas' 12th in 14 tries this year, improved the Horns' record to 40-7 to give Coach Cliff Gustafson his eighth straight 40-win season and 17th in 20 years. DBU fell to 33-9. Cisarik drove in six runs in the sweep, three in the first game when Craig Newkirk added three hits in as many at-bats. Mark Petkovsek, pitching with two days' rest, allowed eight hits but went the distance for his team-leading eighth win in nine decsions.

"He's amazing," Gustafson said of Cisarik. "A little ol' guy like that popping two out of the yard." In the pightcap, Cisarik had his sixth homer of the year with a three-run shot, and Rusty Crockett and Coby Kerlin each had three hits. Kerlin had two RBI singles, and Crockett had a pair of doubles and an RBI single in his battle with Doug Lindauer to replace injured center fielder Elanis Westbrooks.
