By EMILY CHRISTENSEN Courier Staff Writer CEDAR FALLS The thought of decomposing bodies would give most people a little shudder. They dont want to think about what happens to a body that has been locked in a trunk for several days during a sweltering Iowa summer or how bugs attack the body of someone dumped in wooded area just before hunting season. But the thought of being able to study bodies in each of these situations would be a forensic anthropologist's dream. It is a dream Tyler O'Brien, an assistant anthropology professor at the University of Northern Iowa, would like to see become a reality in Black Hawk County.

O'Brien is forming a proposal to seek federal funding for a forensic anthropological research area that would allow students, faculty, researchers and law enforcement the opportunity to study decomposition rates of human bodies in different Midwest environments. Two other "body farms" have been established in Tennessee and New Mexico O'Brien worked with William Bass, the founder of the original body farm, while earning his graduate degree in Tennessee. An Iowa facility, however, would give researchers more information about how bodies decompose in a Midwestern climate, O'Brien said. "I hope this would allow us to contribute to the literature already out there about decay rates as they pertain to the Midwest and could there be a variation because of the Midwestern climate," O'Brien said. O'Brien has yet to garner the support of federal funding agencies this will be his second application See BODY FARM, page A7 pick up piES faQf tonhn f7 v.
