Karloff, Creator Of Frankenstein Monster, Is Dead New York Times News Service London Boris Karloff, 81, who chilled millions in film and stage horror roles, died Sunday of a respiratory disease. Karloff, fifty years an actor, was most renowned as the monster in the movie, "Frankenstein," issued in 1931. Karloff also appeared in many sequels, including "Bride of "Son of Frankenstein," "Frankenstein 1970," the last issued in 1958.

In other memorable films he was the Chinese detective, James Lee and the clever Dr. Fu Manchu. He also went on to triumph on Broadway in Joseph Kesserling's "Arsenic and Old Lace" and in James Barrie's "Peter Pan."
