"John McGill is dead." This Is the sad news which wa3 heard by the early morning riser, after the sombre angel of death, which had been hovering over his homo for the past several months, had at last descended and claimed his own. John McGill was known and beloved by all in tho community, and it was Indeed hard for the people of our town to realize that this model citizen had been called from amongst us to reap the reward he so richly deserved in that land whence no traveler ever returned. So generally was he beloved and admired that his death was a severe shock to all who heard it, and every one mourns because they feel that they have suffered an irreparable loss, that of a true friend, and one which they will feel severely. Mr. McGill was aged 2.S years and wa but in the prime of life, and known to the community as a genial associate and companion, a loving son and brother, a true friend to all and an enemy of none.

Yet he was cut down in the flower of his life, and on every side are noted feelings of sorrow at his untimely death. Mr. McGill in public life filled the Important position of principal of the Birvanton Pine Tree State Casting Votes F01 Governor and Congressmen. 1 Rockland, Sept. 10.

Does Not Deprecate Riches. Oyster Bay, N. Sept. a half hour's address at the bicentenary celebration of the Christ Kpiscopnl church here President Roosevelt talked of the necessity of religion and clean living for the nation's welfare. "I cannot understand any American citizen," he said, "who has the faintest feeling of patriotism and devotion to bis country failing to appreciate the absolute essential need of religion in Its broadest sense to the welfare of this country." The president took Issue with those who had said that the dominant tendencies In the nation today were evil rather than good.

"It is perfectly true," he said, "that In many things us a people the tendencies at work among us today are evil, but It Is perfectly true also that there are plenty of other tendencies at work among us which are good." On the subject of riches the president said: "There is nothing I abhor more than the telling of an untruth, whether a conventional untruth or not, and 1 would on no account be understood as affecting to deprecate material well being. To toll men to disregard riches entirely is to preach to them nut only doctrine which It Is impossible for them to live up to, but which the preacher knows perfectly well they will not try to live up to. Hut put riches below the things of the soul. Give to the body what the body Is entitled to. The multimillionaire is not a harm but a good to the community If he appreciates that he is only a trustee for that wealth; that he Is a trustee for the cause of goodness." The president emphasized the necessity of every mnn being thoroughly self supporting as a basis for spiritual life.

He concluded with the sentiment that the only life really worth living was one that made others better because It had been lived. i Top of Fingers Amputated Andrew Shanosky of Rckley, employed as a driver in the mines, had two of his Angers of the right hand so badly crushed by having them caught in a stretcher on Saturday.
