It was the market's first average setback after a 3-day advance. Many stocks took a zig-zag course, starting out higher, moving downward, and then rallying. Volume dropped below 1,000,000 shares for the first full session this month. The total of 970,000 shares was the smallest since Oct. 29.

Trading was largely professional, with the ge'neral public still a little uneasy after the post-election break. Many deals represented switching from one issue to another or efforts to make a few dollars on quick turnover. Corporation executives voted dividends in the grand manner. Extras, specials, increases and stock payments were announced in an unfaltering stream, but were more or less ignored downtown. Some selling was credited to disappointment over failure of this week's rally to get very far.
