Francis professional building near Covenant Medical Center. Devore does his best to describe the nagging twinge that zips through the joint. "That's common for a pitcher," says Kain, manipulating the pitcher's arm on the X-ray table. "If it wasn't hurting before, it'll hurt when I'm done," Kain tells Devore, whose expression shows that he's heard the line before. They both laugh.

For Devore, the news is both good and bad. The X-rays turn up no bone chips or ligament damage. But neither can they explain what's causing the pain. It won't be injuries that keep Darius Theron Gash from making it to the majors. Gash, 24, leads the Diamonds in virtually every statistical category.

He's hitting .323, with 15 doubles, 24 stolen bases and 66 strike outs. The Padres want Gash to sharpen his eye in Waterloo, and become more selective in choosing pitches. He already has the other tools needed to crack the bigs. "It'd just be nice to be playing dubs (the Padres AA team in Wichita), but I don't think they're gonna move me" says Gash. First baseman Roberto Arredondo is ailing, too.

He twisted an ankle in the league's All Star game two nights earlier. He tells trainer George Poulis he won't be ready for the Reds. Manager Bryan Little is less than pleased by the injury report. And before leaving Waterloo, he lets everyone in the clubhouse know it in language that's saltier than a bag of ball park peanuts. "When someone's got a injury like that, you don't play him in a All Star game," said the fiery Texan, who played his share of minor league ball before making it to The Show.

After airing his gripe, Little disappears into his office. His verbal bean ball was aimed at no one in particular, so everybody smiles. In the dugout, Diamonds Coach Jimmy Lester, struggling with the language barrier, proffers injury advice to Arredondo. "No run. No running," says Lester, making choppy movements with his feet.

"And no jump-ing," he adds, pantomiming little leaps into the air. The reed-thin Dominican nods then jogs onto the field to take a few cuts in the batting cage. No athlete likes to talk about it, but you tell by hanging around the Diamonds' clubhouse that the subject of a career-ending injury is never far from a minor leaguer's mind. Catcher Jim Elliott admires baseball prodigies like Jose Canseco who virtually walk off the high school sandlots straight into The Show. But Elliott, who wants the financial security of a college degree, knows that the an athlete's body can sometimes let him down.

"You get used to that life-style: money, four-star restaurants," he says. "But then you get hurt and it's gone." Pitchers are the most susceptible to the injury bug. Hurling a 5-ounce sphere at speeds upwards of 90 mph for nine innings requires repeating an overhanded motion the human arm was not designed to make. Ted Devore knows what the result can be. On game day, he visits Pat Kain, an X-ray technician and self- Umores Home.

7:05 p.m. Baltimore (McDonald 4-3) at Kansas his shot at the big time. He's spent much of the season on the disabled list with a bad elbow. He's 4-4. He sucks on a wad of chewing tobacco while watching the Cedar Rapids Reds take the field, and expounds on what it will take to "get out of Waterloo." "You'll stay here unless you're really tearing it up," he says.

"But even then, they've gotta find a spot for you. You have to hope something happens to the guys on top." Sometimes, it can happen to you. Shortstop Kevin Farlow holds an ice pack on the inside of his knee, minutes after being "smoked" by an errant line drive during batting practice. "It's possible to get moved up because somebody else gets hurt," Farlow says, tracing with his fingertips the parallel red tracks etched into his knee from the ball's threads. "But you don't want it that way," he says.

"You want to move up because you're playing well." No stranger to pain, Farlow was playing well in Spokane last year before dislocating a shoulder. The Padres shipped him to Waterloo to mend. Along with their winning streak, the Diamonds come into this Midwest League series with a multitude of nagging injuries. Designated hitter John Kuehl, a 23-year-old Scottsdale, product who missed all of last year after undergoing arm surgery, has been left home. "Anywhere." When this season is over, many of the Diamonds will enroll in school for a semester.

Others, in the words of pitcher Ryan Thibault, "will go home and try to find someone who'll give them a job for six months" until spring training starts. Most of them agree that if you're still playing minor league ball at 26, you might as well hang up your spikes. "It's hard to believe that guys my age are in The Show already," says Gill, 22, who Jiit .264 last season for the Diamonds, but has seen his performance slip this season.
