Tuesday, July 2, 1991 Waterloo Courier Page B3 7rr Diamonds rally for 9-4 win League aseball SOUTH BEND, Ind. Waterloo rallied for six runs in the seventh inning and defeated South Bend, 9-4, Monday night in a Midwest League baseball game. It was the Diamonds' seventh win in eight games since the start of the second half split season. the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning as California beat visiting Texas. striking out four, for his 21st Texas tied the game 2-2 in the top of-: the seventh on Steve Buechele's solo homer, but the Angels went ahead to stay in the bottom of the inning againsf (' Kevin Brown (6-6) on Joyner's two-run single. Lance Parrish and Dave Winfield had two-run homers for the Angels. White Sox 5, Twins 4 Carlton Fisk's two-out homer in the 10th inning at the Metrodome lifted Chicago over Minnesota, the Twins' fifth loss in six games. Fisk hit an 0-1 pitch from Carl Willis (2-2) well over the fence in left for his sixth homer of the season. Bobby Thigpen (5-2) picked up the victory with 2 2-3 scoreless innings, escaping jams in the ninth and 10th innings by making excellent defensive plays.

Kirby Puckett had four hits, including a solo homer, for the Twins. Royals 7, Athletics 3 Mike Bod-dicker held Oakland to four hits over 7 2-3 innings and Kevin Seitzer hit a game-breaking three-run triple as visiting Kansas City won for only the second time in 1 0 games. Boddicker (7-6) took a two-hitter into the eighth before surrendering a two-run home run to Harold Baines. Jeff Montgomery finished for his 15th save. looking to do, whether I felt strong or not put that aside and not use that for an excuse." Blue Jays 4, Mariners 3 The Blue Jays sent a holiday crowd at the SkyDome away happy by rallying for three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Seattle starter Randy Johnson had a two-hitter and 1 1 strikeouts through eighth innings, but allowed a leadoff double to Mookie Wilson and threw wildly on Devon White's comebackcr, putting runners on second and third. Roberto Alomar's double off Mike Jackson (4-3) tied the game. Alomar stole third, and after two intentional walks, Ranee Mulliniks grounded to shortstop. Omar Vizqucl's throw to catcher Dave Valle was in time, but Alomar was ruled safe by umpire Ken Kaiser, who said Valle's foot came off home plate too soon. Orioles 10, Tigers 2 Ben McDonald limited Detroit to two hits in eight shutout innings in his first outing since May 22 and Baltimore hit four homers to rout the visiting Tigers.

McDonald (3-3), just off the disabled list after missing five weeks due to a sore elbow, retired the first 12 batters he faced before Cecil Fielder singled to start the fifth inning. Rob Deer's seventh-inning single was the Tigers' only other hit off McDonald. Reliever Paul Kilgus gave up two runs in the ninth. Angels 6, Rangers 2 Mark Langston won his sixth straight decision and Wally Joyner singled home 4 Mortensen Pinch-hitter Robert Arredon-do, who was out of the lineup for a couple of weeks with a sprained ankle, drove in two of the runs with a single. The Diamonds got remarkable pitching from relief pitchers Tony Mortensen and Bruce Ben-sching, who retired the last 14 White Sox batters in a row.

Mortensen, who relieved starter Ted Pevore, his effort was another loss as the Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 6-2. Barfield's two-run blast in the fifth inning made the upper deck in left field and gave the Yankees a 5-2 lead. One pitch later, Maas connected for a shot into the upper deck in right field. "I don't usually watch 'em, but I watched the one Maas hit. It went a long way," Swindell said.

"The pitch to Barfield was the old cement mixer, a hanging slider that rolled over real slow. Maas got a hanging curve." It was the second time in three days that Barfield and Maas hit consecutive home runs. But no one knew the last time two hitters took turns reaching the opposite upper decks at Yankee Stadium. "I've gone up there in batting practice, but never in a game. That was a pretty impressive shot," Barfield said.

Barfield reigned as the home-run king for just a moment, until Maas connected. "I think Kevin was trying to show me up," he said. "Seriously, both of them had some mileage." The Yankees, returning home after a 5-1 road trip, spotted the Indians 1-0 and 2-1 leads before scoring twice in the third off Swindell (4-7) to go ahead to stay. Steve Sax, who had three hits, singled with two outs. Roberto Kelly followed with a double and Sax scored on the play by colliding and jarring the ball loose from catcher Sandy Alomar who was charged with an error.

Don Mattingly followed with an RBI single. Scott Sanderson (9-3) pitched five innings aijd Lee Guetterman worked four scoreless innings for his fourth save. Sanderson has won 10 straight starts against American League East teams since losing last Aug. 19 at Baltimore. Red Sox 6, Brewers 0 Roger Clemens, who had his scheduled start moved back a day by food poisoning, allowed five singles in seven innings as the Red Sox won at County Stadium.

Clemens (10-5) struck out eight and walked one for his first victory since June 14 and only the second in eight games for the struggling Red Sox. He is now 1 1-4 lifetime against the Brewers. "All we set out to do before the game started was move the ball around, and we able to do that," Clemens said. "It was something! was Bob Scanlan (3-3) got the victory as the Cubs stretched their winning streak to three games and snapped the Pirates' five-game winning streak1. Cardinals 1, Phillies 0 Bryn Smith (7-4) allowed three hits over seven innings, then gave way to Cris Carpenter and Lee Smith as St.

Louis won its fourth game in a week over Philadelphia. The Cardinals, who swept the Phils at St. Louis last weekend, won the opener of this four-game set on the strength of Todd Zeile's bases-loaded single in the fifth that scored Tom Pagnozzi. Carpenter pitched the eighth before giving way to Lee Smith, who got his 21st save. He has saved six of the Cardinals' last nine victories.

Bruce Ruffin (1-1), recalled from the minors June 8, gave up 10 hits, struck out seven and walked two in eight innings. New York 4, Montreal 2 Howard Johnson, with 57, moved atop the NL RBI heap as the Mets made the most of second baseman Delino Deshield's fielding blunder. Daryl Boston hit a madc-to-order grounder to Deshields with two out in the third, but Deshields threw the ball away. Garry Templeton followed with a bloop double to left. Mark Gardner (3-5) then plunked Dave Magadan to load the bases and walked Kevin McReynolds to force in a run.

Johnson followed with a two-run single to right. The three unearned runs were enough for Frank Viola (9-5), who allowed a run and eight hits in seven innings. John Franco got the final three outs for his 16th save. American League Now Greg Swindell knows what the pitchers on "Home Run Derby" must have felt like. Swindell served up back-to-back upper-deck blasts to New York's Jesse Barfield and Kevin Maas on Monday night.

But unlike the pitchers on the old TV show who were supposed to give up home runs, all Swindell got for National League Just when things appear out of reach, along comes Ryne Sandberg. Thanks to Sandberg's bat, the Chicago Cubs overcame a 5-2 deficit and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 in 13 innings Monday night. Because of that comeback, the Pirates had their lead in the National League East reduced to five games over second-place St. Louis and to 5 12 over third-place New York. The victory also kept the fourth-place Cubs at least within hailing distance of the leaders, 1 1 12 games out of first.

Sandberg's two-run homer in the eighth cut a 5-2 Pittsburgh lead to one run, and Jerome Walton's solo shot in the ninth tied it. Sandberg won it in the 13th with a single to right to score Damon Berryhill from second. "It was a great ball game," Pirates manager Jim Leyland said. As for Sandberg. Leyland said, "He's a tough out.

That's why Sandberg is Sandberg." "It was a good game all around. We kept chipping away," Sandberg said. "We had a couple of rallies and then the crowd got into it." Cubs manager Jim Essian called it "a great emotional win. The guys were excited and cheering in the clubhouse." With Andy Van Slyke slapping four hits, including a fifth-inning homer, the Pirates built a 5-2 lead for starter Bob Walk, who was attempting to run his unbeaten record to 7-0. But the bullpen couldn't protect the lead.

Sandberg homered off Vicente Pala-cios in the eighth and Walton went long off Bill Landrum, who failed for the first time in 16 save opportunities. Stan Belinda (3-2) had two out in the 13th when he hit Berryhill with a pitch and walked Mark Grace. Sandberg battled Belinda before punching a single to right. "With two outs, you think you're out of the inning," Leyland said. "Then a guy gets hit with a pitch, then a walk and Sandberg fought off a good pitch." Then Bensching mowed down three batters in the ninth. "I'm throwing a lot better since I've been in the bullpen," said Mortensen. "The walks were what got me in trouble before. I'm finally starting to cut down on them." Mortensen was in the starting rotation until being sidelined with a pulled groin muscle. Waterloo catcher Pedro Lopez had a run-scoring single in the seventh that tied the score 4-4.

Then after Shawn Whalen walked to load the bases, Arredondo batted for Jim Elliot and lined a two-run single. Tookie Spann beat out an infield hit to score another run and the Diamonds led, 7-4. Steve Gill's triple in the eighth scored Kevin Farlow, who was hit by a pitch, and Lopez singled to drive in Gill. The most unusual aspect of the Suffolk County judge's decision was that it was based on the argument that family obligations must take precedence over personal career decisions, said the Journal. The sticking point in Gastineau's case was his decision to quit football six games into the 1988 season so he could spend more time with his then-fiancee, actress Brigitte Nielsen. At the time, he was earning $825,000 a year, or $46,000 a game. FOOtball: Mike Webster, who retired after 17 seasons as a center in the NFL, will become a member of the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff. "I will be helping out in a couple of different areas," the 39-year-old Webster said.

He plans to accompany the team to its training camp at River Falls, on July 15. Webster said Monday that his job would be more clearly defined when Chiefs president and general manager Carl Peterson and coach Marty Schot-tenheimer returned from vacation. Webster, who played in nine Pro Bowl games for the AFC, probably will assist with the offensive line.
