WATRISS OF THE COMPANY FOR $100,000. $25,003 PAID AT PUCE OF SALE The Remainder Will Be Paid When the Court Confirms the Sale-Receiver's Certificate. The Austin Rapid Transit Railway company, which for the rast several years has been in the hands of a re ceiver, liajor Ira H. Evans of this city, was sold by him yesterday noon at public outcry in front of the court house to the highest bidder. The road was bought in by F.

H. Watriss of New York, president of the company, and the price paid was $100,000, w'bich amount, in accordance with an order of the court, was the minimum price placed on the road. As soon as the sale is confirmed by the court, it is the purpose of the company to reorganize and some extensive improvements are to be made in the system, which will result In much good to the citizens of Austin. The bonds outstanding against "the company aggregate $343,000 and the certificates of indebtedness and other liabilities make the total amount, Including the bonds, over Out of the above amount paid by Mr. Watriss for the road $25,000 was paid down to Receiver Evans in accordance with the terms of the decree and the balance will be paid when the court confirms the sale.

It is learned that the amount of receiver's certificates amounts to about $80,000 and this will be paid out of the $100,000 received for the road and the remainder will be applied to the payment of the bonds. The sale is to be approved by Judge Maxey and it will take several days. STATE HOUSE HAPPENINGS The following railroad companies have paid their quarterly passenger taxes into the comptroller's department for the quarter ending March 31: The New York, Texas and Mexican Railway company paid $148.41 taxes on $14,841.41, the gross passenger earnings for the quarter. The Gulf, Western Texas and Pacific Railway company paid $85.99 taxes on $8598.79, the gross passenger earnings for the quarter. The Texas, Sabine Valley and Northwestern Railway company paid $47.94 taxes on $4794.15, the gross passenger earnings for the quarter, Chicago, Rock Island and Mexico Railway comtmnv naid $13.33 tavps on $1332.83, the gross passenger earnings ror tne quarter.

The tax collectors of the following counties hied their annual statements with the comptroller's department of the taxes collected during 1901: Eastland, Comanche, Callahan, Crosby, Lampasas, Refugio, Angelina and Jack. The comptroller's department has registered an issue of $10,000 city of Comanche water works bonds. These bonds were first approved by the attorney general's department. The state insurance department has granted a permit to do business in Texas to the Fraternal Censer of Dayton, Ohio.
