Tuesday thru Saturday By PATRICK TAGGART American-Statesman Staff It's too early to call it a trend, but lately foreign film directors have been making better movies on I American themes than Americans.
Take Milos Forman's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," for example. Better yet, take the same director's Just when the late '60s sensibilities of this protest musical should have seemed hopelessly dated, Forman a fresh, delicious film version. Vietnam, long hair, freedom of expression, uptight socialites and a country ideologically polarized beyond recognition -r it was all there in living color and stylishly acted by Forman's energetic cast. And now Michael Apted, an Eng- lishman, has made a perfectly brilliant Hollywood debut with "Coal Miner's Daughter," a film based oh the. autobiography of Loretta Lynn.
It is easy to avoid cliches if you don't know them, and we don't see a single one in Apted's portrayal of Kentucky mountain people. And Ap-' ted's Tightness of vision is encased in a masterworl of craftsmanship. First there is the matter of casting, which features two Texas-born actors, in the leading roles. Sissy Spacek, the red-haired actress who so fine in "Badlands" and "Carrie," plays Lynn; San Saba native Tommy Lee Jones, who provided what little class there Was in "The is her prodding and promot-, ing husband. a curious but wholly welcome stroke of casting, Apted selected rock star Levon Helm to play Lynn's coal-miner father, and it is Helm's that is the movie's most effective and haunting.
All of the supporting players in the this finely balanced comedy-drama are excellent, but in the end the film belongs to Spacek and Jones. Though it's impossible to know if the two had any great personal affection while working on the project, on screen the mesh like gears in a Swiss clock. And because both command authentic rural accents, we are never forced to endure Hollywood's version of Southern talk. Lynn's life is a series of interesting traumas some productive, some catastrophic. A mother of four at 17, she had resigned herself to a life of motherhood and was 24 before her singing career began to flower.
If the film glosses over anything, it is not the depiction of Lynn's use of pills or subsequent breakdown, but in failing to tell how she disentangled herself from this web of insecurity and addiction. Perhaps that is the one secret she chooses not to tell us. With this film as part of the trade, it's still a good deal. "Coal Miner's Daughter" is rated PG for mild profanity.)
