Recently completed, this overhead bridge about two miles west of Charles City, together with 36,000 feet of new culverts and guard rails cost in the neighborhood of 80,000.

It was a state and federal project. The bridge is about 300 feet south of the old highway crossing over the C. M. St. P.

P. railroad where at least one life has been lost and several persons injured. The overhead is on Highways 18 and 218. Pictured above is the control building of the S90.000 disposal plant constructed during the last year at Independence, Buchanan county. It was a PWA project.

More im- pnivcnicnts were made, in Independence during 1039 than at any lime nearly 50 years, the former building boom being during the time C. V. Williams, famous horseman, built the Gedncy hotel and made other improvements, and the llhnois Central and Rock Island railroads built new passenger depots to handle the traffic. Chief among construction work fur the year is the new $233,500 Buchanan county court house and the Independence sewage disposal plant. Many Homes Built.

There were also more private dwellings completed and more remodeling done than at any time in many years, running 1hc total improvement figure to nearly Ten modern dwellings were built in the Thud ward alone. Prominent among these are the homes of Mr. and Mrs. II. G.

Pecker, Mr. and Mrs. Leo O'Brien, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Ratchford.

Other dwellings in the Third ward are those of Carl Dcke, Bernard Nichols, Fay W. Whitney. Grief Badman, (two), and Georfie Boyd. Other residences constructed are those of Dr. C.

E. Millard, in the First ward, Bernard Holgate in the Second ward, Jack Berry in the Fourth ward, and Paul Doan in the Fifth. Disposal Plant Built. The city sewage disposal plant consists of six units scattered over several acres of land located south of Oak Grove cemetery on the east side of a bend in the Wapsipinicon river. The plant was erected within the year at a cost of approximately $90,000.
