He car- ried a crowbar with which to remove the ooulder But as ne unlocked the iron door oetween the mooratory and the cave, ne instantly saw the pile ot deoris ana the gaping hole where the ooulder nad oeen His prisoners had escaped! Dropping the crowbar ne hurried througn the oassageway toward the inner cave Reaching the three steps leading up to he carefully avoided the first step, but as his foot touched the third step, an iron grill suddenly fell oarring his way.

A moment later. Marshall's smiling tace appeared on the other side of the grill, "Yes. Flane." he said suavely "I changed the combination on this gate, anticipating lust this sort ot situation. So vou didnt intercept my last letter to Kirk-brae, after all? I rather thought you would." "But 1 Know now where the for- mula I want is hidden, and I mean to have it." He gave -them terse directions and they disappeared. "I'll find out the releasing com- bination for this gate, never fear!" KIARSHALL smiled thinly. If only Flane could have guessed -the diabolical twist ot fate. For Marshall, at this very moment, was trapped, quite as surely as he had hoped to trap Flane. He had Known for a long time that his -letters were beihg tampered with.

He nad carefully written to Kirk-brae about the change in the com-bination. and had given the letter to Linda to be mailed in Hong Kong. But he had fully expected that Flane would intercept it. Then, if Flane should discover the hiding place ot the formulas and, should go to the inner cave to get them. Marshall had planned to follow him and.

after Flane had entered the cave by avoiding the third step, to trap him by dashing out from the shadows and pressing down on the third step to bring the iron grill down. For Marshall alone knew 1 once the iron grill was in place, it threw off the electric switch on the ladder to the office. He had prepared a perfect trap for Flane. but had faUen into it himself. His only hope lay in Tommy's bringing help in time.

At last, he was free He unbound nis feet Then, crawling along, he found the inert figure ot Marshall. By the lignt ot nis cigarette lighter, he looked aoout the cave Then his neart gave a oound as ne saw a ooulder against one side ot the cave Did it hide an opening? FRANTICALLY he pushed and pulled at it. It was beginning to move: Then. Tommy saw with horror that the entire side ot the cave was aoout to collapse! A few moments later ne nad cleared a way through the debris.

He could see now that this opening led into a passageway. He lifted Marshall and started dragging him along Suddenly, ne felt the old man's form stiffen. A low voice came to his ears. "I'm all right. Tommy.

Leave me oenlnd and get away from here. Linda will be in danger You must get out and help her." "But 1 can't leave you here," Tommy orotested. "You must. Just beyond, is the secret inner cave, where my formulas are hidden. Leading into it are three stone steps.
