Im Mediately after the affair Oreer naounUd bis horse and rode away unmolested, snd in order to avoid further trouble which wu threatened, the entire party re-entered the wagon and returned to Patterson. The affair at Patterson is much regretted by all parties, and by the citizens around Patterson, it is believed, much by tbe Houstonisns. It Is proper to state tbst, sccording to the statements of members of tbe party, Mr. B.idry took no part in the dim culty whatever, but wu simply a bystander and spectator at the time be as shot. Ought a man to be recognized a gentleman who would carry a pistol concealed like an assassin, oa such an occasion, and is not the disgraceful affair due to whisky and the pocket on the hipt Down nr the Rivbb, Up town people, unleu they go there some dsy besides Sunday, know nothing of the activity that prevails on very small portion of the city's territory just west of the river end of Congress Avenue.

It is here and around about that some of the greatest Industries in Texu are to be eatabliahed, and already some of tbem are in their inception. Chief amoog them ia the FLOORING MILL of Emerson A Sprinkle, which has been in operation about one year. Lately they have removed their fifteen horse power engine, and have put in place of it a fifty horse from the "Atlas works," of St. Louis. This engine is one of the most perfect that art and science ever produced.

The bed plate is 13 1-2 feet long, and it and all tbe rests foi attachments are cast in one solid piece. This plate lie upon solid stone masonry s.x feet deep, making the whole structure permanent good workmanship can possibly produce. The fly wheel, moving on a six-inch wrought-iron shaft, measures ten feet in diameter, and baa a twenty-inch face. This wheel alone weighs 6000 pounds. Tbe boiler is wonderfully attractive.

The furnace is built on tbe most scientific principles, while the boiler measures twenty feet in length and four feet in diameter, having twelve wrought-iron flues, each six inches in diameter, altogether giving heating surface of 600 square feet. Sixty pounds of steam will give all the power that may ever be seeded. The capacity of thia engine is much beyond what is required now, but the proprietors intend increasing tbe grinding capacity of their mill from fifty barrels in twenty-four hours to between 100 and 150. A grist mill now attached to tbe concern has a capacity (or grinding 700 bushels of corn in twenty-four hours. New bolting cloths hare just been put in, and the quality of floor turned out is as good as any made in Texu.

Investments already made sum up $13,000. THE ACCTHI IOB FACTOBT, not far away, belongs to Brunei Co. This hu two Carre machines in operation, with an ice making capacity per day of 15,009 pounds. This establishment commenced operations, eight years ago with a very small machine. In 1871 the producing capacity wu 1000 pounds; in 1875 it wu 5000.

This one company cannot meet the requirements of Austin, but it aaa been most prompt in its manufacture and supply, and is deservedly very popular. Two machines gives it an opportunity to produce ice at anytime, even in cue of breakage. They have established cheap rates for ft luxury, hich we hope will lut always in Austin. Just by this factory stands the power of the AUSTIN CITT WATER WORKS, the greatest institution ia our midst. To Cspt.

Mather's energy, and the confidence of F. W. Chandler, are due the existence of these works. The pumping power of its engines is 110 horsepower, and there are now about six miles of pipe laid through the city. Capt.

Mather, from whom we expected to get statistical information, is at preseot in St. Louis, where he has gone to prepare for improvements and enlargements. THE CAPITAL ICB COMPANY hu most substantial works, facing the Avenae. They are owned by Forster, La How Dr. Taylor, of the United States army; Gen.

Wm. Steele aad some others, and the ice turned out by this factory ia auperb. It ia frozen by nature's process, and ia clear and beautiful, even during the present muddy condition of tbe river water, that turned out of the other establishment from distilled wster. The ice is formed in 600 pound blocks, and these are sawed up and either dig tributed to daily customers or stored away ia rooms for emergencies. The capacity of this factory, told as by Mr.

Stokes, ia 15,000 pounds per day. Messrs. Stoke Fisher buy tbe ice from tbe factory and manage the city distribution. There are other things of which we will speak at another time. A fabticulab merit in baking powder ia to have it keep good.

A fsrmer is mixing bantams with prsiris chickens, sad thinks the cross will be a great improvement on either original. Prairie chickens are easily tamed. Misses Ham and Dickenson, who bare been spending a few weeks with their friends, left for Houston last evening, where they will remain until after the fair, The generous distribution of valuable prizes by the Isst drawing of the Louisisns State Lottery popularises, to sn extent never known before, the drawing of halt a million dollars on the flnt prox. Call on Mr. Wbcsdon, at the clerk's desk at the Raymond House, The barber Victor Thomas, on Pe can street, thrust bis fingers forward from the back of a bald-headed man's cranium yesterday, and as the wig rolled up in a knot, to Victor's unutterable amazement, Victor howled. He thought he had scalped the old fellow, who wu madder than a March hare about bis hair, and if the assistant barbers and a stranger had not interpossd he would have fallea on Victor and that would have been the end of him. The be-wigged gentle man weighed 350 pounds. But when Victor smoothed Fslstaff's bsir his tsmper was also toned down with the hair tonic and he strutted peacefully away.

How Gus Black went a-8ilfik. Qua Black's horses, a good pair, were carefully attached to a wagon yester day on the Avenue. They didn't seem much inclined to stay there. In fact, they tried to get away from it, and from Cus. They bucked awhile and shook np the bsrness and things and then departed with great vehemence.

Cus stiffened himself, each shin bone being at right angles with the footboard and Cut's body at right angles with the shin bones and things afore said, and in this angular fix Ous hile, Ous shouted whoal whoat till every idler from the Capitol to the river was on the banquette to see and to listen. Carts, drays, street cars. hacks and wagons and women scattered like chaff before the wind, though the women ain't us chaffy now aa they used to be before pinbacks came in vogue. But the wagon and Qua went gustily towsrds the river bridge and Gus was nervous about it. He said be was afraid the horses would run into the big sewer and get him coiked and jammed mere, or tnat tney would miss the bridge and go over the preci pice.

It was at this point in the terrible flight that Gus's hair began to unkink. People heard it crack as each particular hair straightened itself out of its long-accustomed cork-screw kink, and stood out boldly on end. Gus's hat was thus lifted up. But the forces of expsnsion were equal in all directions, and the hat waa exploded in divers rents and fragments, and it blew away in tatters. Gus went flying through the air.

His seat was jolted from beneath him, the foot-board was displaced; the "off horse" felt it strike his sbsnks; his heels went up snd Gus rolled over backward. His shoulders struck the rear axle flying beneath him; his rotary motion was accelerated, and he came out behind the wagon whirling over and over. Fortunately Gus's head struck first A curbstone, a thin one from Glenn's mica slate quarry, was shattered by the concussion and no harm wu done. ue Dorses were lut seen going over the heights west of the river, and no doubt passed through San Antonio or Laredo Uiis morning. In any event, they were the worst scared pair, unless somebody can match Gus, ever seen in Austin.

We only give the facta as recited by a looker-on, and not exactly these occurred, A Shootiso Affaib. Excursionists from Houston went fishing to Grsnd Lake, and whisky went along with the invited guests, and the TtUgram says that a resident of the country around Patterson had presented Col. Tracy with a rabbit killed somewhere near. CoL Tracy subsequently, on making some remarks to the crowd, and in tending a harmless pleasantry, alluded to the present as affording good diet in the country around, or words to that effect. A countryman took umbrage at the allusion intuiting to his com munity, and asked Col.

Tracy if he had so intended. The latter replied that any man who said he did stated a falsehood. The countryman then struck at Mr. Tracy, who threw him down and pnmmelled him pretty well. In the meantime the friends of both gentlemen began fighting.

Ah excellent old lady who lives on Onion creek, and therefore ought to know whereof she writeth, saya that cucumbers are first sorted into different sizas, and are then packed in bar rels and covered with brine, each sizs being kept separate. Boards weighed down are placed on the cucumbers to keep them beneath the brine. When the season for sale, which is the win ter, begins, the cucumbers are taken out of the brine, washed and put into pure cider vinegar in barrels, kegs or bottles, as may be desired, or they are repacked in fresh brine, and sold in that atate. There is as much sale for them one way as the other. Ws know of no demand for rhubarb vinegar, but do not deubt, if a good, sharp vine gar is mads, it would be as salable as cider vinsgar.

Sbvehal people who have invested in life assurance had torgotten, though the Hatcitye asserts it, that, one after noon, just after King Solomon had written a solid nonpareil column of wise and moral proverbs, he took bis sldest son by the elbow, led uim down the back stairs' of the palace, through the back yard, past the woodshed, out into the alley, backed him up behind Ahitophel's woodpile, looked warily around to see that no one was listen ing, and whispered into the young man's ear: "My son, a little office in a spreadeagle life insurance company is better than a cart load of preferred stock in the Opbir mines." And then the monarch threw his bead on one side, drew in his chin, shut ono eye, snd gazed at his offspring in silence. Three years afterward, when the Great Hebraic Consolidated Stormy Jordan Life Assurance Company, of which that intelligent young Prince was president; went into bankruptcy, the young man was able to let hie father, who was a little short at the time, have 275,000 ahekels for ninety days, on bis simple note oi hand.
