Near Chester Phone 2-8221 P-80's Begin First Trans-Atlantic Trip Beatrice Lillie Decides She Will Paint Is an Artist ant By WALTER LOGAN TTnlUd Staff Correspondent NEW Lfflle, tie comedienne, has blossom sd out as a painter of lilacs, geraniums and delphiniums. She discloses that she got her artistic start by decorating doorknobs in her country place in Surrey. "From doorknobs to canvas," she said, "was only a logical step." Miss Lillie, glv.ing way to an urge to fill her country place with knobs instead of the drab ones she was using, went to ironmonger's to place an order. she discovered they had quit selling them during the reign of Queen Victoria. So she took her brown knobs, dipped them in white paint, hung them out to dry and later covered them with sprays of forget-me-nots and other assorted flowers.

The doorknobs presumably are lying where she left them. She decided at that point that she was an artist, went back to town and began painting on canvas. Only Flower So Far Thus far she has painted only flowers, either In pots or spread out on a table. She prefers the pots because so far she hasn't learned how to paint a table. "Mine simply look as If they were hanging in space," she said.

Some of the pots also look as if they were hang- iBg in space. Thus far she has about 20 paint- Ings to her credit and hopes to give a one-woman exhibition for charity when she gets enough. That will be ditficult becanse she rather absentmindedly gives them away to almost anybody who admires them. Sometimes she forgets to sign them and the recipient usually brings them back to be autographed. Miss Lillie has been hong once, in Hollywood, where exhibited a painting of blossoms off a tree were pink and white and she isn't sure kind of a tree they came from.

She signed thai one "Blossoms by Daisy Peel" but no one knew who Daisy Peel was and she put her other name on it (Miss Lillie In private life is Lady Peel.) Part of U. N. Appeal The blossoms were part of a United Nations appeal for a children's exhibition in Hollywood, where she learned to her horror, she says, that nearly everyone painted better than she did. Miss Lillie thinks she will do better when she gets some more paint brushes. Now she has only one which she dips variously in different colors, achieving a rather blirred effect which is considered excellent modern art because it isn't at all photographic.

She usually does her painting at night after performing in the Broadway revuf "Inside U. S. She has no easel and paints while sitting on the floor with the canvar in one hand and the lone brush in the other. Her latest achievement is a painting of some lilacs which she says would 'look in a dark corner." Press Wirephoto A SOLDIER'S John J. Gregory of Worcester, Mass.
